GREAT NEWS!
FabWrap is bringing Furoshiki workshops to the Western Bay of Plenty!🥰👏㊗❣

Spreading the beauty and practicality of Furoshiki across Aotearoa has always been my passion, so this opportunity means a lot to me !! It’s such a great step forward for me and will also be my first workshop outside Christchurch!!! What a wonderful place to begin!

I’ll be visiting a few different locations across Tauranga to share the joy of sustainable wrapping and meet the amazing local community.

🎟️ Tickets are now on sale!

These workshops are part of the waste minimisation initiative.
Furoshiki is reusable, washable, and versatile, requiring no tape or ribbon - a perfect way to reduce waste while adding creativity to your gift wrapping.
Come and discover the art and joy of sustainable wrapping if you live nearby!

Matariki celebration⭐️ It Māori’s New Year and is a time for reflection, celebration, and honoring ancestors.

New Zealand is a land of incredible natural beauty, multiculturalism and deep diversity. Having spent time here in Ōtautahi, Christchurch for 15 years, I’ve come to appreciate the unique spirit of this place. I fall more in love with this land each year. I acknowledge the tangata whenua, the Māori people of this land, and express my deep gratitude for being able to live, create and celebrate Matariki here in Aotearoa New Zealand.

This upcycled Furoshiki design is a heartfelt creation of two cultures close to me of Japanese and Māori. Each piece of fabric carries its own story, and together they represent a beautiful connection between my heritage and my life in Aotearoa. Both side are special! It just like the cultures it reflects. This creation is very special to me, and I’m honoured to share it with you. I hope it speaks to you too. 🤍🌿🇯🇵🇳🇿

Putting a more Japanese touch into each Furoshiki is a delightful experience. It's so much fun to explore different wrapping techniques and discover the best ways to showcase each creation! Conclusion, a simple is the best!

Tomorrow at the Upper Riccarton Library starting at 6.30 pm. I hope to see you there! 😊

Would you like to learn more about artisan crafts from experts practising their craft?

One of our fantastic craftspeople, Ayumi Hirata, will be introducing audiences to Furoshiki culture as part of Upper Riccarton Library's "Craft Snippets" series, on Wed 28 May 2025, from 6.30-7.30pm.

Furoshiki is a Japanese wrapping cloth and multi-purpose material that is used in many different ways. It provides an alternative to paper and plastic, and can be used for wrapping, carrying, transporting and decoration.

In her free community talk, Ayumi will share her passion for sustainability and showcase the beauty of this time-honoured Japanese tradition. For Ayumi, Furoshiki is a means of connection and represents something gentle and heartfelt.

After the talk, stay on for insights into new craft books at the library, and chat about craft activities in and around Waitaha Canterbury.
