We were talking to an old friend the other day, talking about the coming year, that it's the year of the Horse starting tomorrow. She mentioned that this year has been the year of the Snake, and how she described it being about sloughing the old, shedding the things we've been holding on to, in preparation for what the New Year holds for us all.
It struck a chord with me, as that's what has been happening in the shift into our new home. I found things that l've been hanging onto for years, stuff left over from the first Studio we built back in 2003, carried to the old Studio in Mashland Rd, after the Earthquake and finally out here to Birdlings Flat. It served no purpose after the first shift, but l carried it anyway, in the mistaken belief that it would come in handy sometime down the track.
Hiring the skip and loading it full of the accumulation of sh*te that l've been collecting in preparation of our move has been freeing on one hand, but painful on the other. History, potential material that l've been carrying, but never got around to turning into the thing l'd planned when l found it, old photos, old tools, the detritus, the stuff.
Watching my machinery being taken into storage and realizing that everything that l've been using for the last 22 years, was obsolete long before it became mine. It all still functions as it was designed too, but there are newer, faster, quieter ways of doing the work, and that maybe it's time to start looking forward to the changes that life has given us this year.
Happy almost New Year people, the last 22yrs of having the Studio has put me in touch with some amazing people from all walks of life, from all over the world, you've shared a little of yourselves and soaked up whatever you have from your time with me. The carving was the bonus. Thank you all for the opportunity l've had to share a little of myself with you all. I'm unsure if I have the energy or the time to start again, l'll leave it until next year to make that decision, either way it's been an honor and a privilege to have been able to have you all through the Studio.
