Ive spent most of two days so far sat at my knitting machine, working away on this jumper, and its finally almost finished!
Many people assume a knitting machine does most or even all the work for you, when infact on a vintage flat bed like im using, the machine knits the stitches as I push the carriage over them. On every row when working intarsia like I am currently, I'm counting and laying yarn on the appropriate needles, twisting yarns around each other to prevent holes, watching for and picking up the occasional dropped stitch, and even manually moving stitches and casting them off (or on) as needed for things like the neckline and sleeves. Also, keeping an eye on all the pegs needed for weighting the yarn ends, then there is the duplicate stitching, seaming and the many ends to sew in.
Yes it is faster then hand knitting, but it still requires a lot of manual work by me. My current designs dont use a punchcard (that's an even faster way to knit and has its place for other styles). For me it's all about enjoying the long process, and finding joy in the way it all comes together in the end 🙂
It takes a minimum of 2 days to finish each jumper im currently making. Machine knitting takes time, but remember that each of my pieces has love added to every stitch ❤️
