I feel a deep connection to my tupuna (ancestors) when I weave with harakeke (NZ flax). It is a beautiful art form where I find a space for myself that is peaceful and rewarding. I identify as a NZ Maori and Friesian, growing up I didn't realise how linked these two cultures were. My Mum and Dad bought these cultures together with all 8 of us children. Even though we were never bought up on a Mara

e and she was a long way from her home, Mum instilled the values of her tupuna with us, so we would never forget the importance of whanau and our connection to them.
