Cheers to the weekend!

A dear friend has just launched stormeeritual and I think she’s onto something. Fierce ginger, tart rather than sweet, and one of those things you didn’t realise was missing from your drinks repertoire until you tried it.

We’ve been experimenting with ways to enjoy it already. Last night, poured over ice with soda water for a punchy grown-up drink without all the sugar. And this morning, I mixed some with hot water and fresh lemon. So good!

Not many drinks work just as well for a Friday night as they do for a slow Saturday morning.

Proud of you, Charlotte, my friend x

My Melbourne base for the long weekend is the Lancemore Hotel Crossley St.

The hotel sits in the heart of Melbourne’s theatre district. The hotel’s interior was designed by Melbourne architecture and interior design practice Carr - around the concept of “on stage, off stage”. The drama is in the public spaces, offering a clever nod to the theatre stages just outside the door.

The oversized chandelier, which takes centre stage in the lobby, was reclaimed by Carr from the old Georges department store on Collins Street. Against the raw concrete and deep blue velvet, it’s a beautiful piece of Melbourne history hiding in plain sight.

Early morning walks admiring the incredible architecture of some of Melbourne’s oldest buildings, including the Parliament of Victoria building.

The vestibule floor was designed by Parliament’s architect Peter Kerr and made by Minton in England, one of the leading ceramic manufacturers of the 19th century. They are encaustic tiles, meaning the pattern is created from different colours of clay rather than being painted or glazed onto the surface. The Parliament of Victoria describes it as the largest surviving single-design encaustic tiled floor in the world. It was laid in 1888 and took four months.

Shadow play inside the guest room of Lancemore Hotels in Melbourne. Diffused light and a cool room - the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the laneways outside.

This weekend I’ll be exploring Melbourne anew. It’s been quite a few years since I’ve visited this vibrant city, but it holds nostalgic memories for me. As a university student in the 90s I worked at Goldmark jewellers in Burke Street mall over the summer break. The store is long gone and the city has evolved, but the same vibrant energy I felt back then still exists. I can’t wait to explore….

Spring has finally unfurled its delicate flowers, tentatively popped its head above ground and whispered ever so quietly “I’m here if you have the time to notice me”. Beautiful flowers from the abundant gardens of stormeeritual thank you x

Just like a piece of jewellery you might wear for purely sentimental reasons, so too for the art and many of the objects we choose for our homes.

This artwork was painted by my grandmother Ethel Glubb over 30 years ago. At the age of 65, after having 9 children and dedicating her life to her family, she travelled alone to Russia and Europe.

While travel is commonplace now, it was not so in 1980 for a woman in her 60’s. Inspired by the art and culture she experienced, Ethel returned to New Zealand and became immersed in art.

Talented and driven, she was accepted to the Ilam School of Fine Arts where her world continued to expand beyond family, meeting other artists and younger students from all walks of life.

In the early 90’s she was part of a group show at the Centre of Contemporary Art in Christchurch where this artwork and many of her other beautiful pieces were on show.

It was painted from her studio window in the late afternoon sun, overlooking the rooftops in Christchurch. She captured a moment in time, before the skyline changed, buildings fell in the earthquake and life moved on.

Standing in front of this artwork, that I have looked at a thousand times over 30 years, happiness blooms in my heart. It means more to me than any piece of art I could have purchased from a catalogue or online.

Authentic, hand-painted, imperfect.

An original art work that reminds me of my grandmother and the inspiration she continues to be to me.
