How fast does commercial LED lighting pay for itself?

For many New Zealand businesses, upgrading to LED lighting delivers a payback period of just 2 to 4 years – while continuing to reduce operating costs for more than a decade.

One recent warehouse upgrade we completed:
✔ 725 lights upgraded to LED
✔ $63,000+ annual savings
✔ 30 tonnes less carbon emissions per year
✔ Payback period of just 2.7 years

The biggest savings typically come from:
• Warehouses & manufacturing facilities
• High operating hours
• Older metal halide or fluorescent lighting

And it’s not just energy savings.

LED upgrades can also reduce maintenance costs, improve light quality, lower heat output, and help create safer working environments.

With electricity prices continuing to rise across New Zealand, the ROI on efficient lighting is becoming stronger every year.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by at the Better Home and Living Show in Wellington – it was great to meet you and have some genuinely interesting chats about how you are heating your hot water.

We were also lucky to be set up at Hnry Stadium (formerly Sky Stadium) and to showcase the upgraded lighting that we installed last year. It’s always great seeing the difference good lighting can make in a real-world space.

Building a new home? Your hot water system is one of the biggest decisions for long-term running costs.

Hot water typically makes up 25–35% of your electricity use, so choosing an efficient system from day one can make a huge difference.

That’s why more new builds in New Zealand are switching to heat pump hot water systems – they move heat instead of generating it, making them far more efficient than electric or gas.

💡 Why it’s worth it:
• Lower power bills
• Reduced energy use
• Lower emissions
• Ideal for fully electric homes

A typical family can save $1,000+ per year compared to a standard electric cylinder.

Installing during the build also means:
✔ Easier, more cost-effective setup
✔ Better system placement
✔ No need to upgrade later

Systems like the Emerald Pro are built for new homes – high efficiency, fast hot water recovery, and smart controls to maximise savings.

Electric hot water upgrade + water filtration added

This Christchurch home has replaced its electric hot water cylinder with an Emerald hot water heat pump, reducing annual electricity costs by approximately $550.

At the same time, a water filtration system was installed by our partners at Aquapro, delivering both improved efficiency and enhanced water quality in one coordinated upgrade.

Upgrading your sports facility lighting to LED can deliver huge benefits – lower power bills, better visibility, and a more professional playing experience. 💡🎾

But the reality is, not all LED upgrades are created equal.

There are a number of important factors that can make or break the outcome – from lighting design and uniformity, through to meeting the required standards for competition play, and ensuring long-term performance and reliability.

Get it right, and you’ll create a facility that performs better, costs less to run, and is future-proofed for years to come.
Get it wrong, and you could end up with poor visibility, uneven lighting, or a system that doesn’t meet expectations.

That’s why it’s so important to understand what goes into a successful upgrade before getting started.

We’ve put together a guide covering the key things every club and facility should consider before making the switch to LED – helping you make a confident, informed decision.

Another household enjoying smarter, simpler hot water. ♨️

We’ve just completed an Emerald Pro hot water heat pump installation in Kingston, on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. The home previously relied on bottled gas, but by switching to the Emerald Pro system the family will now save around $870 per year on their hot water costs.

Even better, they no longer need to worry about running out of hot water or waiting for scheduled gas bottle deliveries. No more checking bottle levels, no more delivery days – just reliable, efficient hot water whenever they need it.

Hot water heat pumps are one of the easiest upgrades a household can make to reduce energy bills, cut emissions, and simplify everyday living.

A new report from the New Zealand Green Building Council warns that importing LNG could increase energy prices, require significant taxpayer subsidies, and expose New Zealand to volatile global markets.

Ecobulb Managing Director Dr Chris Mardon says there’s a smarter, more cost-effective solution available right now: hot water heat pumps.

“Before we spend hundreds of millions subsidising imported gas, we could fix one of the biggest sources of household energy waste – hot water,” says Mardon.

Hot water typically makes up around a third of household energy use. Heat pump systems can cut electricity use for water heating by up to 70% compared to traditional electric cylinders – permanently reducing demand, lowering peak load pressure on the grid, and eliminating the need for gas water heating.

Unlike LNG infrastructure, which centralises risk and ties prices to international markets, hot water heat pumps are distributed assets installed in homes across the country. Every upgrade reduces national demand and helps ease wholesale price pressure.

Ecobulb is calling for government investment to be redirected toward grants or financing support for hot water heat pumps and rooftop solar – delivering permanent bill reductions for Kiwi families instead of subsidising imported fuel.

Hot water heat pumps are available now, proven, and scalable. If we’re serious about lowering energy costs and strengthening energy security, accelerating their adoption is one of the smartest steps we can take.
