Access to 'this end' of Town may prove a little challenging next week

🚧 𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 – 𝗦𝗛𝟮/𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗲𝘁, 𝗗𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗸𝗲 🚧

We have new dates confirmed for the wastewater work below, which was previously postponed due to weather.

Tararua Alliance will be replacing a manhole on SH2/High Street near the Miller Street intersection (by BP).

📅 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀:
8am Monday 18 May – 5pm Wednesday 20 May

⚠️ This work is weather dependent. If postponed, work will move to Wednesday 20 May – Friday 22 May.

🚗 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀
State highway traffic will be detoured via local roads, with delays expected to add around five minutes to travel times.

⬆️ Northbound detour:
Rawhiti Street → Queen Street → Allan Street → Guy Street → Ruahine Street

⬇️ Southbound detour:
Swinburn Street → Waterloo Street → Miller Street → Denmark Street

🚶 Pedestrian access will remain available around the closure site.

⛽ Access to BP will remain open and is encouraged via Station Street (rear entrance to BP).

🚙 Vehicular access to Miller Street will be via the Denmark Street roundabout.

21 years ago on the 1st of May 2005 : I remember unscrewing this Steel sign on the Workshop door, and heading over to the local Sign Writer to have my Name and Cell number installed

As I had just 'taken over' Native Woodcraft as a going concern

Nothing major has changed in the layout, or range or products

Though since then the Fax, and 'zip zap' card machine have both been well and truly retired, and the grave-o-graph has not been as busy as it used to

Other than the 'build up' of the Creative Garden Panel Range, aimed at the Landscaping industry, they still make their way all over NZ via online sales and existing network of Stores, our newest addition to our online Retailer finder is Timberthings - Pine Outdoors Taupo

A sample pack is currently waiting at the door for collection by our courier

The core of the business is still Hand Carved Gifts for the Aotearoa Tourism industry

Utilising Ocean Shell Studios - Giftware and Craft Paua for embellishment's

I've added my touch with a few new items which are still in demand

We're one of 'those' little-BIG producers in NZ

These days it is 'just' me in the factory, attempting to shuffle priorities and align processes so orders get made with minimal delay

As well as taking on the local Lock-Smith basics just over 10x years ago, with backup from KC Locksmiths Palmerston North (call them for the 'big jobs')

Supported by PoutamaTrust and a registered Buy New Zealand Made business

At the moment I'm thinking of all of those I have worked with in my time here since 1998 the things I've learned, and the stories that have been told in the "Smoko room"

Lets see if I am still here in another 30x years eh

🌧️ Tararua District Weather Event Update #5
🗓️ Tuesday 17 February | 9.30am

🌊 Rivers continue to reduce following Sunday/Monday’s weather event and the weather has settled. All weather warnings have been lifted for the Tararua District.

🏢 The Emergency Management Operations Centre has now been stood down as the district moves to recovery and a return to business-as-usual. Council services have returned to normal.

⚡ Power supplies and road restoration works will continue throughout today and likely into Wednesday for affected power outage locations.

📡 The Ākitio cell phone tower is currently operating by generator, while the Herbertville cell phone tower came back online overnight.

🤝 This was a serious, widely felt event across parts of New Zealand, and the people of Tararua responded brilliantly to the early declaration of a local state of emergency on Sunday. This helped keep our communities safe.

📋 The local emergency status is likely to be reviewed over the coming days. However, a wider regional state of emergency remains in place. ℹ️ Any updates will be shared on Council channels as they become available:

My phone still works, but we're under an official state of emergency

𝐒𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 - 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟑 - 𝟏𝟔 𝐅𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔, 𝟖:𝟑𝟎𝐚𝐦 ⚠️ℹ️

An Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been operating overnight, monitoring the situation, assessing impacts and preparing for potential effects of incoming weather.

Mayor Scott is thankful for the response from local communities,

“Our priority has always been the safety of our people. Declaring early meant we could coordinate our response and support the community as the weather came through. It allowed us to be ready to respond quickly as conditions changed overnight.”

“I want to acknowledge how well our communities have responded. People took the forecasts seriously, prepared early, and showed real resilience. That proactive approach makes a genuine difference.”

The State of Emergency remains in place, and residents are asked to be aware of current impacts and follow the safety advice below.

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬:

Current impacts to the district include power outages, road closures, and fallen trees. Some self-evacuations have taken place in coastal areas, and Council’s welfare teams are checking in with these people.

🚌 A total of 16 schools across the district have notified that they are closed today (16 Feb) and buses are not running. Please check directly with your school if you are unsure of their status.

♻️ Dannevirke Transfer Station is closed due to power outage. Glass recycling collection for Dannevirke will take place as normal, however if your bin does not need to go out, please hold onto it until the next scheduled glass collection date.

💬 Eketāhuna Library and Service Centre will be closed today due to staffing matters.

🚰 There are currently no impacts to water infrastructure, and our teams continue to monitor this.

🛣️ There are roads closed across the district, please check the Current Road Status page on our website (link below), updated every 10 minutes. At this stage, Saddle Road is scheduled to be closed until 12noon today – please check before travelling.

🚫 Additionally, the decision has been made to cancel today’s meeting of the Dannevirke Community Board. We will let the community know when this is rescheduled.

📱 Please report issues by calling 06 374 4080 or 06 376 0110. We have also increased our monitoring of the Antenno app, which can be used to report issues.

🔸 Avoid unnecessary travel, particularly on rural roads.
🔸 If you do have to travel, check your travel route beforehand, drive to the conditions and expect delays or temporary road closures.
🔸 Look out for neighbours, whānau, or anyone who may need support especially elderly people, residents in isolated areas, and people with limited access to information.
🔸 Check official council channels for updates, including road status information. For State Highway updates, refer to the Journey Planner of NZTA.
🔸 Please avoid streams and rivers as these may rise rapidly.
