Bioforce rears and sells biological control agents, the good guys, for the control of plant pests and diseases. At our production facilities, found in the horticultural region of Pukekohe, Bioforce produces multiple beneficial organisms, organisms that have the ability to suppress pest populations below levels that necessitate the use of chemical controls. We strongly believe that it is in everyon

e’s interest to reduce the quantity of chemical pesticides applied to horticultural crops; be that to reduce the production costs of the grower, to improve the health and working environment of horticultural workers, protect the natural environment, and to provide the consumer with the freshest, tastiest and healthiest produce and ornamental plants possible. Bioforce advocates for the sustainable management of horticultural crops. We understand that growers want to produce crops in a sustainable manner, but that they cannot do this (and continue to feed their own families) if there are no sustainable options available to them. It is vital that growers have the means to control the pests and diseases that can potentially devastate their crops. We endeavour to provide growers with the tools necessary to achieve the sustainable production of horticultural crops.

Always a good start to the year when customers are in the news for all the right reasons.

If your summer travels take you near Piopio stop off and pick up some seasonal berries from Mike and family, definitely worth a detour.

Of their produce, 95 percent is sold at the farmgate, about half-way between Hamilton and New Plymouth on State Highway 3.

🕸️ Meet Phytoseiulus persimilis 🕸️

One of the most well-known predatory mites, P. persimilis (or as we call them Mite E) is a specialist spider mite hunter and a go-to solution for biological control 🌿 Believed to be the first biocontrol in human history with records dating back to ancient China.

Fun facts:
• It feeds almost exclusively on spider mites, especially two-spotted spider mite 🕷️
• A single predatory mite can consume dozens of spider mite eggs and juveniles each day 😲
• Unlike many mites, persimilis is bright orange-red, making it easier to spot on plants 🔴
• It reproduces quickly when spider mites are present, allowing populations to build fast and keep outbreaks in check ⚡

Small, fast, and incredibly effective — a true spider mite specialist 💚

🪰 Why Volucella inanis is seriously cool 🪰

This sneaky hoverfly might just be one of the most fascinating biocontrol agents around 👀

Here’s why:
• Volucella inanis is a master of disguise, mimicking wasps so it can slip into their nests unnoticed 🎭
• Its larvae develop inside wasp nests, where they feed on waste and unhatched wasps 🐝➡️🚫
• Landcare Research has imported and released V. inanis in New Zealand as part of biocontrol efforts targeting invasive German and paper wasps 🇳🇿
• Adults are harmless, non-stinging, and also act as pollinators 🌼

Tiny infiltrators with a big mission — helping tip the balance against some of NZ’s most problematic wasps. We pray they prosper and forful their mission💚

🐞 Meet Halmus chalybeus 🐞

Also known as the steelblue ladybird, Halmus chalybeus is a striking and highly effective predator found in gardens, orchards, and shelterbelts 🌿

Fun facts:
• Its metallic blue-green colour makes it one of the most eye-catching ladybirds around ✨
• Both adults and larvae feed on scale insects
• It’s especially valued in orchard systems for helping control scale naturally 🍎
• Originally from Australia, it’s now well established in New Zealand 🌏

Beautiful, tough, and hardworking — a standout beneficial insect 🐞💚

🐞 Meet Coccinella undecimpunctata 🐞

Also known as the eleven-spotted ladybird, this striking beetle is a voracious predator and a great friend to growers 🌿

Fun facts:
• It gets its name from the 11 black spots on its bright red wing covers 🔴⚫
• Both adults and larvae feed heavily on aphids, helping reduce infestations quickly 💪
• One ladybird can eat hundreds of aphids during its lifetime 😲
• When threatened, it can release a yellow fluid from its legs to deter predators — a defence known as “reflex bleeding” 🟡
A classic beneficial insect with serious pest-control power 🐞✨

🦟 Meet Aphidoletes aphidimyza 🦟

Tiny as an adult but fierce as a larva, Aphidoletes is one of the most effective natural enemies of aphids in gardens and glasshouses 🌿

Fun facts:
• It’s the larvae that do the damage — each one can kill dozens of aphids a day 🔥
• Larvae inject a toxin that paralyses aphids before feeding 😲
• Adults are mosquito-like midges that feed on nectar and pollen, not pests 🌸
• They’re especially good at controlling aphids hidden in curled leaves and dense growth 🍃
A powerful, targeted solution for aphid control — naturally 💚

🕷️ Meet Engytatus nicotianae 🕷️

This fast-moving predatory bug is a valuable ally in crops and glasshouses, helping keep pest populations under control 🌿

These little critters have been making waves in the last 3 years with Turners and Growers (T&G) tomatoes Actively rolling out this solution across all of their tomato growing sites. Keep an eye out on our store in 2026 when we've caught up with the commercial waiting list and ready to deploy them everywhere!

Fun facts:
• Engytatus nicotianae is a generalist predator, feeding on pests like whiteflies, psyllids and moth eggs 🥚
• It’s highly mobile and actively hunts, making it great at tracking down pests hidden on plants 👀
• Both nymphs and adults are predatory, providing control throughout their life cycle 🔄
• It’s commonly used in integrated pest management (IPM) programs as a natural alternative to chemicals 🌱
