Crofters Yarn

Crofters Yarn What we love: wool, people, crafting & bringing them all together.

Warning. This is an emotional request from me.

I am tired and exhausted after the events of the past few weeks. I don’t want to dwell on it, but after the final correspondence from the Dunedin City Council, I am feeling incredibly saddened and uncertain about what the future looks like for Crofters Yarn.

Over the last little while I’ve been doing my own research and reflecting deeply on what Crofters truly is.

What I believe I created wasn’t simply a retail store. I believe I created a community. A place of creativity, connection, support, friendship and the “you can do this” attitude that so many of us have shared together.

But now, I need to hear from you.

If you feel comfortable, could you please share with me, either publicly here, by PM, email or text:

🧶 What social or wellbeing outcomes you’ve experienced through being involved with Crofters Yarn

🧶 Whether you come along for community participation, connection, learning, creativity and friendship

🧶 Or whether your involvement has primarily been retail/purchasing based

Your experiences, stories and feedback would mean the world to me, and are incredibly appreciated.

Thank you to each and every one of you for walking this journey beside me 🧶❤️🧶 As many of you have heard me say, Crofters Yarn is no longer me, it’s us!

If you get an invitation from Crofters Yarn to join a group. Please ignore it!
Meta has decided to invite you into our private groups which no longer are having conversations takes place in them.

Just ignore them!

Thanks Jan

Next Tuesday we begin our annual colourwork Knit Along.

This year due to circumstances we have thrown open our knits to ‘choose your own pattern’. We have such an array it’s going to be a fabulous few weeks at Eureka.

Today we are sharing some garments that are going to be created. It’s going to be fun! And possibly a bit noisier than others as we share our journey with each other. Strut Your Stuff, our annual Charity Knits fundraiser is going to be incredible this year, all this colour we’re bringing to the ‘cat walk’ 🧶❤️🧶

Today you’ll find us knitting as a community at The Corner Store cafe at Toitu. Mark & Oli have amazing coffee & food, we bring the noise & the crafting. We’re there 1 til 3pm. See you there.

Below is a selection of knits from some incredible designers, we are very grateful to them for being so clever. All patterns are available on Ravelry for you to purchase, just log in, type in the name of the pattern, read the comments (best way to know if you’re purchasing a dud or a fabulous design!) push buy now. Easy as! Thank you to all the designers below, your designs make us come back for more!

We’ve had a lovely weekend at mum’s last weekend, the weather was beautiful in Clyde. Mum is modeling her gorgeous new scarf she’s knitted using Want Need Crave,

The minute you realise your knitting matches your ‘me made’ bag 🧶❤️🧶

I’ve really been busy knitting lately.

2 hats off the needles in a week, another cast on.

Lulu Vest almost finished, 3 placards and no button holes to think about (l‘m just going to sew the buttons on through both side layers).

Dragonfly Sweater is coming along slowly, I started doing the arm motifs then decided the beetle could eat them….. and out they came. So now I’m onto the plain knitting.

What’s on your needles or hooks? We’d love to see what you’re up to ❤️🧶❤️

I am blown away by our call to action for charity knits. You guys all around the country, are all doing amazing things for our tamariki, all ages and stages, you actually are incredible ❤️🧶❤️

Volunteering is often the quiet unseen communities scaffolding our villages. For many it’s not a natural default, for others it’s in our blood.

Whichever camp you sit in, you are a beautiful, resourceful member of your community.

I will work on our charity arm this week for Crofters Yarn. It’s going to be a big job but so rewarding.

We hope to see you at Cobb & Co on Wednesday 12:30 to 3pm, then 6:30 to 8pm ish.

Thursday 1 to 3pm at The Corner Store cafe at Toitu.

Saturday the 13th of June is World Wide Knitting Public Day. We’re going to be at The Grange on the Taieri from 10 to 1pm. If you haven’t already registered, please do so (link is below). Or send me a messsge to let me know you’d like to join us. We’ve only a handful of places available.

Have a great week.

Edit: Due to so many awesome groups out there, we’ve started our own FB ‘Group’. Later this week we’ll have a list up of as many groups as we can find. That way we’ll help warmly dress our littlies in our own local communities.
It’s a big job but with doing ❤️🧶❤️

We have a conundrum and would love your input in helping us find a solution.

Crofters Yarn has been knitting for charity purposes since our inception. We have not applied for community grants to make this happen, we have self funded with ‘Strut Your Stuff’ and our Train events. We do not intend to change our model, as it’s unique to us.

However, with the demise of a great NZ knitting charity, we now have early education centres knocking on our door asking for help of woolly knitted donations for their tamariki. They are missing what was donated to them through the trust which has disbanded.

What do we do?

Our most recent is a Kindergarten in South Otago, they have asked if we could knit vests and hats.

We don’t have the capacity to fund this through Crofters Yarn, & we certainly don’t have the knitters available. We already have our group click clacking fast enough with our own charity knits.

So how as a community can we make this work? We know of many stashes waiting to have a purpose - can you help? (we would rather not rely on Funders as we know how under pressure they currently are).

Do we have any South Otago or surrounds woolly creators who could put a call out for wool donations locally in your area? I know you have at least 2 knitting groups in Milton, there must be other groups I’ve not yet met in SO. Can any of you help or would like more information? I have a contact name and details we can share.

I also know that this is a delicate topic. We at Crofters Yarn do not have to feel obliged to be part of this ever increasing charity issue. However, as many of you who know me well, it’s a topic I personally cannot let go.

I also know there’s bound to be many groups out there knitting for charity. Does anyone coordinate or has anyone collated a list of who’s doing what in our communities, so we can move forward collaboratively?

If there isn’t, I could & would be happy to do so, & would welcome others to join me.

It’s tough out there (also tough for CY as we are currently hamstrung by our council). I am limited in what activities I can & cannot do.

But I can continue to distribute our charity wool. Much of it has gone out the door the last 2 weeks. I’ve delivered it around the city and put it out for pick up. Let me know if you would like a ball or 3 to create either new born hats, fish & chip vests or car seat blankets for Queen Mary. Or vests for a local Kindy.

I also have a bag of Peggy squares we as a community knitted and crocheted for the Dunedin Bedding Bank, anyone want to put them together, then we can donate another blanket or 2 to Janine to help with her great work.

We have about 2 more wee car seat blankets that need completed from our Knitting on the Train event. Anyone keen to finish one of them? (A big thanks to Heather who’s made a fab job of the few she took home and completed.)

Thank you if there’s any way you can help. Please feel free to PM me.

It’s always a very sad day when we say goodbye to a community member ❤️🥰❤️ or in this case 2!

Amy found our group while here looking after a bunch of international uni students. She’s experienced more of New Zealand than we have. She’s an absolute fan of turning our brushtail possums into garments for her family.

Crofters Yarn was a huge part of Amy’s NZ family, she came on bus trips, outings, pub knitting and we loved having her and Jocelyn spend Christmas Day with us at the beach. Our grandies loved playing with Jocelyn and her friend 🐚🌊☀️

Amy & Malcolm, thank you for being such a big part of our CY journey. We know you’ll be back, we would love to think we can visit you one day too ✈️. I’ll make sure to have a suitcase full of possum & merino with me 🧶❤️🧶

Safe travels home.

If you want a wee taste of our Crofters Yarn community, we’re in the Cafe at Toitu today 1 to 3pm. The Corner Store have the best coffee n cake (my personal opinion lol)

Happy crafting 🧶🧶🧶

Did you go along to the Museum and see the penguins? There were some brilliant designs. Nik tells me they all sold and the funds are now going to be put to great use at the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital. These guys do such an incredible job!

Today you’ll find us at Cobb & Co in the Dunedin Railway Station, we are invited to have 2 sessions here, which brings our Wednesday Community Knits back to almost where they were, thank you Christine and C&C team:
12:30 to 3pm then again
6:30 to 8:30pm.

Bring your projects with you, and enjoy a drink or a nibble from the Cobb & Co Menu.

If you are wanting to pick up some Charity Knitting wool, let me know and I will bring some with us. Or feel free to drop some of your knitting off, thank you.

Our Thursday Community Knits are at Toitu with Mark, Oli and their team at The Corner Store cafe, we are there 1 to 3pm. Come enjoy the atmosphere that comes with this great spot.

World Wide Knit in Public Day for 2026 is Saturday June the 13th. We are again heading to the incredible space at The Grange in Mosgiel. This will be a registration event only, as spaces are limited. Please Register here: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/Xyxyhus1Aq
