One of the most striking elements within the Starship Children's Hospital Atrium is the series of oversized native fern graphics spanning the glass walkways.

Designed to be experienced from multiple perspectives, the ferns create the feeling of walking beneath branches stretching overhead when viewed from the corridors below. From the upper levels, they transform into a canopy view, as though looking down through the treetops of a New Zealand forest.

These large scale graphics play an important role in creating the immersive forest experience throughout the atrium, helping connect the architecture, storytelling, and natural environment into one cohesive journey.

A simple concept, carefully considered to create a different experience from every level of the space.

An exclusive behind the scenes look at the design and creation of the Flying Warblers for the Starship Atrium.

From initial hand sketches through to laser cutting, CNC routing, printing, painting, and final installation, every step was completed inhouse.

Every bird was thoughtfully designed and crafted bringing together art, technology, and skilled making in a truly unique way.

We're incredibly proud of the final result and the role they play in helping transform this special space.
