Over the past few days, David has been at the Mondoluce showroom for Melbourne Design Week, personally building the monumental sculptural work, Bilang.

The concept for Bilang was initiated by Murrup Biik artists Chris Joy and Kim Wandin (Wurundjeri Woiwurrung). Meaning “string bag” in Woi-wurrung, the work has been constructed as a giant three-metre-high woven form, expressing the strata and ochre tones of the land.

It has been incredible watching Bilang take shape row by row in the showroom. We would love to hear from anyone who visited and saw the process unfold. ✨

Now on display alongside Bilang is the newest sculptural lighting concept, Manta, inspired by the movement and graceful form of the manta ray, as well as Dusk, David Trubridge’s latest battery-powered portable lamp.

If you missed the live build process, the completed exhibition remains on display until 23 May.

And don’t forget David’s evening talk, Think Like a Tree, on Thursday 21 May, 6–8pm

A first look at Manta - our newest lighting design, currently in prototype form.

Inspired and named after the oceanic manta ray, the “gentle giants” of our oceans.
Made from birch plywood, the design diffuses a warm glow, revealing every grain and vein of the natural material. At 1100mm wide, it’s an intimate interpretation of a majestic creature that can span up to 7 metres in the wild.

A new feature we’ve been exploring sits within the spine. For easy transport the light is designed in two halves that magnetically snap together, forming both the structure and the light source.
It’s a piece that leans into that effortless, gliding feeling of a manta ray, where organic form and engineering come together.

You can see the prototype in person at the Mondoluce showroom during Melbourne Design Week (May 14-24), where David will be sharing it for the first time.

Visit the link to RSVP and be one of the first to see Manta in person: https://davidtrubridge.com/pages/evening-talk-with-david-trubridge

When Manta moves into production, a percentage of each purchase will go directly to Manta Watch New Zealand, an organisation dedicated to the research, conservation and understanding of manta and devil rays in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

A great example of how our light finishes can work with the architecture rather than compete with it.

These Floral pendants in 600mm (24”) and 800mm (31”) sizes, all with white 2 side finishes, are paired with the surrounding white walls and ceiling. The result is a sculptural feature that feels integrated into the space rather than battling for attention.
Balancing the two sizes in a tall ceiling space creates visual interest without overpowering the room.

And this is with the lights off! Imagine the magic when they’re on 🪄
