People are often surprised to hear we're not actually in town.

We're Wanaka Upholstery and we serve the Wanaka area and beyond, but the workshop is out at Hawea Flat. It's home-based. We moved home in 2017 after baby number two, for more flexibility and more time with the kids.

We did have a brief stint back in town earlier this year. We keep reconsidering a return to the little big smoke, and the cons keep winning.

So we're still working from home, and we're available by appointment. Please call ahead or email to arrange a time (contact details in our bio).

Come out and see us. Bingo will supervise.

In the workshop this week, we have more variety...

An advertisement banner needing some additional loops sewn in, two wee footstools (wait till you see the new fabric), wear and tear repairs on a few PVC bags we made 5 years ago, full reupholstery job for a tattoo table in need of new vinyl and the Chaise is back from the owners giving the woodwork some love once it was all stripped down.

Is there anything we can't do?! No... but some things we won't.

Ahhh, we love a good DIY repair job.

This ride on mower seat back had seen better days. Nothing a bit of electrical tape could fix, right?

Luckily, the owner had finally come to the conclusion that it was time to sort it out properly before it got any worse, or the seat started to look the same way!

A small settee, given a proper rethink.

Started out plain cream. Arms off and frame stripped back. Returned in Warwick Fabrics (NZ) Ltd Camden Charcoal multi stripe, no piping, no skirt, and the two-seat squab traded in for one single squab.

If you've spent any time in the workshop or caught a few social posts, you've seen the old signs hanging around — leftovers from a couple of business lives before this one.

Remarkable Upholstery came first. Bevan started in 2003 in the corner of a shared Queenstown workshop, named after the Remarkables right there on the doorstep.

Upholstery Alley followed in 2011, also in Queenstown before moving to Wanaka, built around classic car and vintage restorations — the name borrowed from the "Gasoline Alley" pit stops of the motorsport world. It even had its own painted road marking at the entrance to the Gordon Road workshop, running all the way through to the back where the cars came in.

For a while we sponsored a local Queenstown ice hockey team too, the Upholstery Alley Gators, with official branded jerseys straight from the USA.

Two names, one genuinely confused sign collection, a lot of history for one small business.

We rebranded to Wanaka Upholstery in 2015. The signs never left.

We reupholstered 5 tired barstools from the Makarora Country Cafe & Camp. They had vinyl with ripped seams and foam peaking out, definitely done their dash.

The owners chose Bison vinyl from WT Distributors in a vintage style brown that gives a nod to its original mid-century roots. Featuring a subtle mottled two-tone appearance and finished with minimalist Antique on Steel upholstery nails from Trimtex to secure the back panels.

Nothing over the top as requested.

We think they look more original than they did before!
