“Soooo many people asked about my pounamu today and I told them my dad carves pounamu and he made this one for me.” - Proud 8-year-old after the Miharo Murihiku Polyfest.
Ashby was wearing his ceremonial piece on stage; a mako niho (shark tooth) with koru etching, whānau notches and ringbolt lashing.
Mako niho is a powerful symbol of courage, ferocity and resilience. When worn, it is believed to inspire the wearer with these qualities while also providing protection, and connection to the natural world.
Judging by his passionate performance on stage today, I think it did just that!
➡️ I currently have some openings for new commissions and recommend getting in touch asap if you’re aiming for Christmas gifts.
