🇦🇺🦘Pounamu keeps us close to home 🇳🇿🥝

Loved carving my niece’s first taonga. Worn with pride across the ditch, this small porowhita (circular) design speaks to infinite possibilities, protection, and wholeness.

“This is the best gift I have ever received.”

What a special response from the person who now calls this shepherd’s whistle taonga their own.

Well done to his partner who thoughtfully commissioned this piece as a truly meaningful gift that carries both purpose and connection - a tail-wagging win!

▪ A pendant crafted from meaningful souvenirs ▪

Enjoyed this creative curveball! An exotic black stone and a metal bullet shard, transformed into a wearable keepsake of personal significance. The commissioner came to me with the components and the vision - thanks for trusting me with your precious pieces.

🐦🦜🕊 Forest & Bird's has got me wondering which manu I should carve next? Keen to hear what you think!

As for my BOTY vote… let’s just say that in this household the bird banter is in full flight, so I’m keeping my pick under wraps!

🌟 Dela’s pikorua angel, Ashby’s mako niho shark tooth and Lace’s koru disc only come out for special occasions.

Each one was specifically designed, crafted and gifted to them as a taonga that we’ve chosen to remain kaitiaki of until they turn 18.

💝 It is said that when gifting pounamu, the most important thing is the connection and intention behind the gift. That’s what makes custom pieces extra special.

These three are always keen to learn more about my craft and the cultural and spiritual significance that comes with it.

🤯 Honestly… it’s pretty mind blowing to think that their pieces (and all the commissions I do) may become taonga tuku iho, treasured heirlooms passed down many generations to come.

“Soooo many people asked about my pounamu today and I told them my dad carves pounamu and he made this one for me.” - Proud 8-year-old after the Miharo Murihiku Polyfest.

Ashby was wearing his ceremonial piece on stage; a mako niho (shark tooth) with koru etching, whānau notches and ringbolt lashing.

Mako niho is a powerful symbol of courage, ferocity and resilience. When worn, it is believed to inspire the wearer with these qualities while also providing protection, and connection to the natural world.

Judging by his passionate performance on stage today, I think it did just that!

➡️ I currently have some openings for new commissions and recommend getting in touch asap if you’re aiming for Christmas gifts.
