How cute is this? It's a transportable throne! A fold up chair in remnant fabric. But wait! Us furniture nerds had to find out more...
This piece is an antique Victorian upholstered folding campaign chair, dating from approximately the late 19th century.
This style of chair is commonly referred to as a "campaign chair" or carpet chair. They featured an ingenious cantilevered design that allowed a highly decorative, cushioned armchair to fold completely flat for easy transport or storage.
Woodwork: The frame showcases heavy bobbin-turned (or spool-turned) woodwork along the legs, backrests, and arm pillars. The top features an ornate Renaissance/Gothic Revival carved pediment crown, a style popularised by famous 19th-century American furniture designers like George Hunzinger.
Upholstery: The seat and back are finished in a colorful, vertically striped tapestry fabric. This multi-colored striped plush configuration was incredibly popular in the late Victorian era.
