Fleecewood Farm & Woolcraft Workshops Owner: Anne Grassham - NZSWWS tutor Phone: +64 3 5418161 Fleecewood is a 30 Ha farm nestled in the Nelson foothills, about 30 minutes drive from Richmond.

For more than 20 years we have been producing quality fleeces specifically for spinning and other handcraft use, and now stock associated supplies and equipment ( www.woolcraft.co.nz ). We also offer small group workshops ( www.woolcraftworkshops.co.nz ) on many aspects of woolcraft, including spinning, fleece preparation and dyeing, weaving, knitting and felting (including needle felting). Visitors and students are welcome to make friends with the sheep. Visit by appointment only. Please ring or email.

I will have a stall at the CF Area day next Thursday in Richmond, but space is limited. I plan to bring a range of fleeces and felting needles, but there is no room for my usual range of dyed slivers and some other things. However, I am happy to make up orders people and bring them so you can save on postage costs. You just have to let me know my Wednesday morning, so I have time to make your order up. Those who have already let me know what they want do not need to contact me again. I look forward to catching up with everyone on Thursday.

Weka!! I used to like seeing them pecking around tramping huts and in the bush. Unfortunately, I have created a perfect weka habitat right on my doorstep. They aren't eating my garden, just pulling out the plants to see what is underneath - hoping for a worm I guess. I am trying to grow potted plants to sell for charity, but the weka family think the pots are for them to investigate. I have repotted some several times now. So yesterday, I had had enough. Abby and I spent all day finishing the weka fence around the veggie garden. I piled up the w**d pile again and went to bed. This morning, the w**ds are strewn out again and Abby comes in saying there are 3 weka inside the garden fence. The interesting thing is they didn't seem to know the way out when chased. So now we are clearing the undergrowth out of the native garden so they have fewer places to hide. Anyone got any other ideas? I don't want to keep a dog. Maybe I could borrow one for a day :-)

We were vaccinating the lambs today. It was an opportunity to take a look at both the ewes and lambs, and spot drench a few that need it. Most are looking pretty good. I thought we had finished with lambing, but wait! There is more! Another one of the hoggets produced a lamb - the second hogget to have lambed this year.

I know lots of you like seeing photos of the sheep and lambs, so here are a few more (thanks to Abby). We have had 80 lambs born and 4 that haven't made it this far. Almost over now with just a handful of ewes still to go.

Meet Buttercup and Marigold. They're not fully fledged pets, but we have been topping up them up with the bottle. Their mumma loves them and is very attentive, but appears to have mastitis on one side so has a big job feeding these two hungry mouths with only one teat producing milk. The little mischiefs are adorable as, but they're not very interested in posing for the camera to get a 'classic' adorable pic. These ones show their personality instead though 🙂

About 2 weeks ago we had a wind storm that caused a eucalyptus tree behind the house to take on a distinct lean. Today, while we were in town, the tree must have fallen. It took out an alder tree, but missed all the hazelnut trees! It couldn't have been planned better. I haven't yet measured the height of the eucalypt, but I'm guessing 35-40 m.

Was up at 3 am giving these girls a fed (Yes, those legs under the ewe belong to a second lamb). Mum is very attentive, but not so good in the milk department, so I'm helping her out.
