Kelly's Upholstery Kelly's Upholstery is a well established owner operated business since 1987. Kelly's Upholstery are craft upholsterers, not manufacturing upholsterers.

We recover furniture from antiques to contemporary pieces. We are trained in replacing coil springs, horsehair and flax stuffing through to modern foams and fillers. Our motto is to do the best job, give great service and to use the best products available for our customers.

These 1960’s Unit chairs were originally made to be used as single chairs or pushed together like this 2 seater sofa. Quite often they were sold with a center chair with no arms to make the unit into a 3 seater sofa. We’ve recovered these in a gold self-stripe Warwick fabric and the woodwork was repolished by Mike Jacques.

Our customer loved their old chair enough to want to get it done again in green leather, so we gave it a new lease of life. We pretty much replaced every bit of foam and webbing. Gabby taught Rose how to do the chair nailing – there are 7 meters on this chair. The photo shows them nailing the outside back together.

This 1930’s/40’s lounge chair is part of a 3 piece lounge suite we have recovered. The top cover looked very old, so I was surprised when we found another one underneath – which looked in better condition😃They knew how to build good frames back then, it was still in great condition; but everything else needed to be replaced. The navy blue and white Warwick fabric we used is a fairly new range but very popular. We found a plain blue fabric to use for the piping, which I think has worked really well. Another big pattern matching job.

For a number of years now I’ve been hosting morning tea once a month at home. It’s a get together of some older upholstery and motor trimming guys, some that are still working in the trade around town, friends and some customers. There are even two fabric reps who come when they’re in town. Three of the guys are in their 80’s and I'm not sure how many would be in their 70’s. Last week we had 17 here for morning tea. I ran out of chairs and cups😲 It's great for the girls to chat with some of the older guys and hear a bit about their history in the trade. It's become quite a social catch up.

We found another two fabrics under the top layer on this small chair, which all needed to be removed. Mike and Debbie Jacques repolished the frame. Once we’d stripped it down we started rebuilding it from the base up, with all new padding and springs, and then recovered it in this beautiful floral fabric. We also found a nice variegated gimp to frame the inside back panel.

I’ve seen a lot of badly damaged furniture come into our workshop but this might take the cake. Our customers had this little chair for 50 years and never did anything with it; it's just been sitting in a shed. Mike and Debbie Jacques did an amazing job of rebuilding and repolishing the frame. Rather than replacing the cane the customer decided on this bright and cheerful James Dunlop fabric for the back and seat.
