Last winter I planted an almond tree and a chestnut tree… it honestly took me ages to decide what nut trees to put into such a limited space.

In the end, I figured—just plant what our family loves to eat 🌰

Yes, chestnuts come with those spiky shells 😅 but hey, we can always burn them off in the campfire while toasting marshmallows 🔥

And wow… even from a tiny little first harvest, the taste of fresh almonds made it so worth the wait.
(Also… why are they so hard to crack?! 😂)

Best time to plant a tree was 7 years ago… the next best time is NOW 🌱

The Jam Day That Inspired Me Once Again 🍓✨

When I decided to turn my back garden into a permaculture food forest in 2020, it came from fear during Covid and a desire to secure naturally grown fruit and vegetables.

Today, we invited two friends to pick cranberries, blueberries, strawberries, and apples to make jam together, and the whole experience was deeply humbling. What began as an attempt to feel safe and secure about food has become a place of learning, sharing, and building close connections with both the land and the people we care about.

A food forest is not just a forest that grows food. It is a forest that teaches us how to care for the place we live and the people we live with.

Composting our food waste is the number one priority for me and the foundation of healthy soil. I do it for the children and for their future. Today’s jam-making session has inspired me once again to put more energy into spreading the art of composting.

Jam was 😋

Working bee this Saturday at Waitohi Picton Community Garden 🌱
If you haven’t been before, this is the perfect time to come and help us bring the garden to life!

🌱 Waitohi Picton Community Garden – Working Bee This Weekend! 🌱

This is your reminder that our next working bee is this Saturday, 28th of February from 10am to 12pm.

We’d love to see as many hands as possible in the māra — whether you’re a regular or it’s your first time, you’re warmly welcome. Every little bit helps keep our garden thriving for everyone in the community. 💚

👉 Please comment below or send me an email to let me know if you’re coming.
It really helps with planning tools, tasks, and (of course) kai!

See you in the māra this weekend! 🌿✨

Back at it again — hot compost number 2 for 2026! The first one at home is cooking really well.

It’s been so amazing to see how many kids are engaged and excited to learn and help with hot composting at school. Today we learned about landfill, and honestly, I learned so much too.

I can’t wait to share the joy (and rewards!) of using the bokashi bin this year 🌱
