Melanie Lynskey’s LA home is such a good reminder that the most memorable spaces aren’t the “safe” ones — they’re the ones that feel personal.
It’s layered and lived-in. Bold colour. Beautiful pattern. Pieces with a bit of story. It doesn’t feel styled for resale… it feels styled for real life (and real joy).
And honestly? That’s the permission slip so many of us need. If you love colour, use it. If you love pattern, bring it in. If you’ve been talking yourself out of something because it’s “too much” — it might be exactly what makes your home feel like you.

I see this all the time: clients second-guessing the colour they adore because they’re worried about what a future buyer might think. But you’re the one living there now.

If resale value wasn’t a factor, what would you choose? A moody green? A dusty rose? A deep inky blue?

Never Choose Your Paint Colour First

Here's advice I always give my clients: select the areas with the largest real estate first—the ones with the least choice once you remove what doesn't work for your home.

Start with flooring. It's a big area and sets the tone for everything else.

Then benchtops. In a connected kitchen, living, dining space, these are a feature and a large surface that influences your palette.

Then window furnishings. With our large stacking sliding doors and big windows in NZ homes, curtains or blinds drawn at night create walls of fabric. This is a significant visual element.

Paint selection comes last. There are literally thousands of paint colours—and if one doesn't exist, we can custom colour an option.

Work backwards from what's fixed, and the rest falls into place.

Double-tracked sheers + linings = one of my favourite "real life" window solutions.

We've recently finished a set for a client's renovated home and they're doing exactly what we wanted them to do: making the room feel soft and calm, while still being genuinely functional.

Front track = sheers for daytime privacy and glare control (without losing that beautiful natural light).

Back track = linings for the evening - warmth, full privacy, and a more finished look.

It's a great option for living spaces and bedrooms. And if you choose a hardworking, UV-resilient fabric but hang it ceiling-to-floor with a deeper pleat, you get that elevated, tailored feel without going overboard on budget.

Day: light + privacy.
Night: cosy + closed-in.

Same window, two moods.

There's something truly special about working with returning clients—people who already know and trust your eye, and who are ready to create something beautiful together.

This stunning Fendalton home is a perfect example of that kind of collaboration. Built to the most rigorous standards with striking architectural lines and ultra-modern design, it's a home where every detail has been thoughtfully considered. From the soaring cathedral ceilings and pale oak floorboards to the bespoke joinery and carefully curated finishes, this is a space where harmony and warmth are certain.

We were honoured to be part of bringing this vision to life—working alongside the brilliant Sheppard and Rout to ensure that the interior design matched the calibre of the architecture. The result? A magnificent home that feels as good to live in as it looks.

This home is now for sale, and we think it's absolutely worth a viewing. There's something special about stepping into a space where every element has been designed with intention.

It's been a while, and I've missed saying hello!

Not because we don't want to stay connected—quite the opposite. But between getting back from summer holidays and diving headfirst into 2026, we've been absolutely swamped. The kind of busy where the days blur together, and suddenly it's March and you realize it's been two months since you last paused to take a breath.

But here's the exciting part: all that busyness has a beautiful reason behind it.

We have some truly spectacular projects unfolding this year. A couple of stunning architectural builds that are going to be absolutely gorgeous. A brand new showhome that we're thrilled to be part of. A constant stream of beautiful curtain projects that have Lynda absolutely buzzing in the workroom (she's been creating some magic back there). And of course, plenty of styling projects that keep us doing what we love most—helping homes tell their stories.

It feels like 2026 is shaping up to be a really special year, and we can't wait to share the journey with you.

So welcome back. We're so glad you're here. And this week, we're diving right back in with all the things we're loving, the design tips that matter, and the moments that make a home feel like home.

Getting Your Home Guest-Ready: The Window Furnishing Edition

Christmas guests are coming, and suddenly you're noticing things you've walked past for months. Dusty blinds. Smudged windows. Fabric that could use a little TLC.

Here's the good news: you don't need to replace anything. A little strategic cleaning goes a long way.

For Your Curtains:

❌ Don't wash them (we've seen it end badly!)
✅ Spot clean instead—target those marks and stains
✅ Vacuum gently with an upholstery attachment to lift dust
✅ For hard-to-reach areas, a hairdryer on cool setting works wonders

For Roller Blinds:
✅ Gently sponge with a damp cloth (test a hidden area first depending on fabric)
✅ Wipe clean and leave to air dry
For Shutters:
✅ A simple wipe with a soft cloth brings them back to life

For Venetian Blinds:
⚠️ They're tricky, we won't lie. But here's the trick: avoid the cord laddering. Keep dirty water away from the cords so you don't stain them.

Fresh, clean window treatments instantly make a space feel more polished. And the best part? All it takes is a little care (and potentially some minions to clean for you?!)

Christmas on a Budget: The Hacks That Actually Work

Let's be honest—December can drain the wallet fast. But here's the thing: the most memorable Christmas moments aren't the expensive ones. They're the ones where you've been clever, creative, and a little bit cheeky.

Table Styling Hacks (Zero Budget):

🕯️ Raid your garden for greenery—eucalyptus, ferns, native foliage. Free and stunning.
🪴 Use what you have—mismatched glasses, different plates, wooden boards. Eclectic is elegant.
✨ Candlelight is your secret weapon. It hides imperfections and creates magic.

Gift Ideas for the Hard-to-Buy-For:
🎁 A beautiful candle (always a win)
🎁 Quality tea or coffee they wouldn't buy for themselves
🎁 A plant or potted herb for their kitchen
🎁 A cookbook or beautiful book they'd love
🎁 Homemade treats in a pretty jar

The 5-Minute Afternoon Tea Hack:

Store-bought sponge cake + Nutella slathered between layers + a generous dollop of cream on top + crumbled Flake bars + fresh berries = looking absolutely fabulous with zero effort. Seriously. Five minutes. Everyone thinks you've spent hours.

The secret to Christmas magic? It's not about spending more. It's about being clever, intentional, and sometimes taking the shortest route to get the result.

Monday Mood: Back in the Workroom 🪡

There's something so satisfying about starting the week with beautiful projects in progress. Right now we're working on custom curtains for a stunning new home / a major interior renovation and also our handcrafted cushions for the Hanmer Fete and honestly, this is the part of the work I love most.

It's those moments when you can see it all starting to take shape—when the fabric choices feel right, when the vision you've been holding in your head starts to become real, when you know the client is going to walk in and be absolutely thrilled. That's the magic of this work.

Spring has brought such gorgeous projects our way. From bespoke curtain commissions to styling consultations that are transforming entire homes, the energy right now is incredible. And I promise to do better at bringing you along on these journeys—the process, the decisions, the beautiful "before it's finished" moments that make the final reveal so satisfying.

More behind-the-scenes coming your way this week. Stay tuned! 💚

What's on your project list this week? I'd love to hear what you're working on!
