Let me tell you why I love Gem Culture so much.

I’ve always loved jewellery, but I’ve never understood why you have to spend a fortune to own something really beautiful. That’s where Gem Culture came from. I search for gorgeous second hand, vintage and estate rings that I would love to wear. I’m looking for beautiful gemstones, interesting designs, quality craftsmanship and, most importantly, rings that represent incredible value.

And this is the bit I really love. Someone chose it, loved it and wore it. Now it gets a whole new chapter with someone else. I think there’s something pretty special about that. Buying second hand also means you can often get a much bigger or more interesting ring for your money than you would buying new. You’re not paying for all the overheads, and you’re giving a beautiful piece of jewellery another life.

There’s nothing better than when I find a ring with a gorgeous sapphire, an unusual vintage setting, a beautiful old diamond or a gemstone you don’t see every day. Sometimes I’ll see a ring and immediately think, “Yep. I know exactly who is going to LOVE this.” And I want that someone to be you.

Every ring is cleaned, polished and checked before it comes to you, and I’m very picky about what makes it into the collection. Because I don’t want you buying a ring just because it’s a bargain. I want you to open the box and think - OMG I LOVE it! That’s exactly what Gem Culture is about. Beautiful rings. Great value. Lots of character. And jewellery that deserves another life.

September’s birthstone is the Sapphire, and while most people instantly think of that beautiful deep blue, sapphires actually come in an amazing range of colours. You can find them in pink, yellow, green, purple, orange and even some gorgeous peachy and pastel shades. They’re one of those gemstones where there really is something for everyone.

Blue Sapphires are the classic, but I love how unexpected some of the other colours can be. Pink Sapphires are pretty and feminine, yellow Sapphires have a lovely warm glow, and green Sapphires can have a beautiful earthy, natural look.

Whatever your colour, they make a very special piece of jewellery, and if you’re lucky enough to have a September birthday, you’ve got plenty of gorgeous options to choose from!

I recently went to the Cartier exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria while I was back in Melbourne, and it was such a beautiful exhibition. I’ve always loved jewellery, so being surrounded by hundreds of incredible Cartier pieces, from early designs and amazing gemstones to tiaras, watches and those iconic panthers, was pretty special.

What I really loved was seeing the history and craftsmanship behind the jewellery, and how Cartier’s style has changed over more than 100 years while still being instantly recognisable. There were so many pieces I could have stood and looked at all day long, and the stories behind some of them made them even more fascinating. Just one highlight of my Melbourne trip, and a lovely excuse to combine two things I love: going back to Melbourne and looking at beautiful jewellery.
