When you think of knitting accessories what do you picture?

Stitch markers, interchangeable needles and project bags are part and parcel of modern knitwear culture but knit accessories would have looked rather different for our ancestors.

Here are some notable ones…

1.Knitting sheaths.
Commonly used across Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries, knitting sheaths were wooden tools worn tucked into the waistband or apron. They held one knitting needle steady, allowing knitters to work faster and more efficiently, particularly when producing stockings for trade.

2.Chatelaines.
Victorian knitters often carried their tools on decorative waist chains known as chatelaines. Needle cases, scissors, and small sewing tools would hang from clips attached to the belt, keeping essential items within reach throughout the day.

3.Swan’s down glove stretchers.
During the Victorian period, delicate knitted gloves were carefully shaped after washing using metal glove stretchers. They helped maintain a smooth fit and refined appearance once the gloves dried.

Many of these tools became less common as knitting shifted from essential labour to domestic hobby, but they remain fascinating reminders of the skill and physical demands of knitting.

If you could bring ONLY one back, which would it be?
