Reel mowers cut well, but they come at a cost: a high purchase price, heavy maintenance, and long periods of downtime. Trimax set out to change that.

In the next video of our 25 Years of Pegasus series, founder Bob Sievwright explains the thinking behind taking on the reel mower industry:

"We had proven that we had a very good rotary double-roller cutting mower with ProCut. So there was an opportunity to take on the reel mower industry with a three-deck rotary mower, building a machine that was more productive, more cost-effective, and had longevity."

The result was a mower with cut quality to rival reel mowers, without the price tag, the maintenance, or the downtime.

25 Years of Pegasus, Story 3: The 5th Pegasus ever built to UK specification is still working today, and it's clearly been looked after.
That's the machine belonging to Neal Harper of Glendale Services in the UK. In his words:

"This machine started life in our Lewisham contract in London, which we still have, but now resides near Luton cutting school grounds every season as needed. It's getting a bit tired now but still puts in a decent shift when asked. Not sure the serial number plate is correct as it's been painted, and our records show us as having it possibly since 2002."

Possibly 23 years old, and still on the job. When it's not in use, it's wrapped up snug in tarps, a small detail that says a lot about how it's been cared for.

It started with a simple idea in 1999: a tough chassis, proper suspension, and three ProCut decks working as one.

Founder Bob Sievwright takes us back to where the Pegasus concept began, in the first video of our 25th anniversary series.

In this video, you'll see the original prototype out testing.

This month marks a significant milestone in Trimax history — the 25th Anniversary of the Pegasus.

When the Pegasus was first introduced, it wasn’t just a new product — it was a world-first. As the original triple-deck trailed mower, it redefined what was possible in large-area mowing and set an entirely new benchmark for the industry.

Launched at SALTEX and immediately put through back-to-back demonstrations across England, the Pegasus quickly proved its value in the field. Its performance, productivity, and innovation didn’t meet industry expectations — it completely reshaped them.

What began as a bold idea quickly became a global standard. Today, the triple-deck configuration pioneered by Trimax is widely adopted across the industry — a testament to the lasting impact of the Pegasus.

25 years on, the Pegasus continues to represent the innovation, durability, and forward-thinking engineering that defines who we are.

25 Years of Pegasus, Story 2: When Mike Matuska lost a spindle on his Pegasus, Trimax's founder didn't mail him a replacement. He got on a plane.

It's one of the stories from Mike, of Delta Bluegrass Company in the United States. Back in the wet winter of 2003, Bob and Ray left a 16-foot Pegasus for Mike to trial. "We tried it in a field we couldn't mow that had three inches of water, and the Trimax 16-footer went through it like butter."

The 16-footer turned out too small for the operation, so Bob went back to New Zealand and built two 20-footers, something he'd never done before, and delivered them on schedule by April.

Some time later, disaster struck: a spindle failed. "When I called Bob to send another one out, he didn't just send one. He jumped on a plane, flew out, installed it, and flew back home to New Zealand. Now if that isn't service, I don't know what is."

26 years on, Delta Blue Grass now owns 10 Trimax's.

We're on the hunt for the oldest working Pegasus out there. For 25 years, Pegasus mowers have been putting in the hours across councils, contractors, sports grounds and open parkland. We know there are plenty still hard at work today, some 10 years old, some 15, and quite possibly older.

As part of our 25th anniversary, we want to find them and hear the stories behind them.

Our first Pegasus story is in, straight from Tim Jellicoe of South Devon Turf. Tim started with a 2003 Pegasus 493, then added a 2006 Pegasus 610 (pictured), still in use today. In his words:

"When we purchased our first Trimax, it was a notable forward step from any other rotary we had tried, both in build quality and cut quality! The cut quality was so good that our higher-maintenance cylinder mowers were used far less, which resulted in reduced maintenance costs. The same 610 continues to be the go-to mower for a quick clean and consistent cut to this day... the Trimax is the one machine we haven't considered replacing, because it does a great job year after year."

What's kept his Pegasus going for so long? He credits Trimax's comprehensive dealer network, and for Tim, he mentions Campey Turf Care Systems have looked after him well.

And on what's next: "It is only now that we look to the new model of Pegasus with OptiAdjust, and can see significant benefits of in-cab height of cut control... great for improved turf health, and a likely reduction in clipping collection."

Back where it all started. Trimax began in 1981 building flails for New Zealand's kiwifruit orchards, and the Force S2 is still out there doing the job today.

Mowing one minute, mulching the next, no need to get off the tractor. The Force S2's hydraulic rear flap switches between the two right from the seat.

One machine doing the job of two, whenever the ground calls for it.
