Earth Ceramics

Earth Ceramics Ceramic Travel Cups NZ, is the sustainable solution to disposable/plastic coffee mugs. Visit our store to find out more about us.

We make hand-crafted, reusable ceramic travel cups that retain heat longer than average. Our cups are inspired by traditional Japanese ceramics, which embodied the principles of ‘Wabi, Sabi, Suki’ roughly translating to ‘The Beauty of Imperfection’ – the subtle quality of handmade pottery reflecting the beauty of nature.

As the kids settle ready for the excitement tomorrow brings, I’ve taken a moment to reflect on the year. It started on such an exciting high with taking over Earth Ceramics and I have thoroughly enjoyed and learnt so much from it. A big twist came mid way through the year with a new part time job working for a local ceramic and glass artist which has been a great opportunity and as the year has progressed I have increased my hours there. It’s meant my time to make cups has reduced and in turn I have had to reduce commitments but I feel like I am in a really good place with a mix of work, business and family commitments. Thank you so much for all the support in 2023! It is hugely appreciated ❤️ Have a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I will be taking a break to spend time with my family and back to shipping out orders from Monday 8th January.

The school holidays provide a big break in the making rhythm for me. Whilst I love having the kids home and the change to the normal routine of getting out of the house and to school, by the time they're over I'm definitely looking forward to some quiet solo time! These cups came out of the plaster molds a couple of weeks ago and have been drying over the holidays. Today I have been tidying up all the rough edges l before they head into the first kiln firing.

Do I need a heat band for my cup?

I always recommend using a heat band for hot drinks. The cups do heat up with hot beverages and it makes them so much more easier to handle. Our heat bands come in two sizes - the thin band shown is what I like to use at home as it's quick and easy to pop on when required. For hotter drinks or when I'm out and about with a cup where I may need to hold onto it for longer periods, I use our thicker band which gives more protection.

All our cups now include a thin heat band but if you prefer to switch to a thicker one just make a note when purchasing.

Clay recycling time!

One of the great things about clay is that until it’s fired it can be recycled and reused over and over. The slip cast process I use means that I have minimal clay waste - just a small amount of clay which gets trimmed from the cup rim which is at the top of the cup mold. I collect these trimmings into a bucket and once it’s full, dry them out and then add water to rehydrate and mix well back into a smooth liquid clay which can then be reused.

Today is World Refill Day. A good day to celebrate all your reusable cups and containers and to reflect on how small changes such as using these can result in a big impact. In NZ alone, it is estimated that nearly 300 million disposable cups are thrown away each year. Just imagine if they were able to be removed from our waste stream.

For the last few months our family has been busy setting up a new home for Earth Ceramics at our property nestled in the Titirangi bush. It’s fair to say the process has taken longer than we first envisaged but we’re excited to have a small functional studio space in operation where I can make our beautiful handmade ceramic cups.
