Back doing what we love — building out in rural Canterbury.

This time it's Glentui. Just us, the ute and a section with the hills as a backdrop.

There's something about starting a build out here — space, quiet, a view that doesn't change. Every site's different, but that part never gets old.

2023 — the year we leaned all the way into everyday liveability.

A kitchen built for real life, a walk-in wardrobe with room to actually grow into, and natural light doing all the work in the bathroom. This is what happens when good design meets how people actually live.

We're revisiting our past showhomes as we build up to something new — our latest showhome opens its doors this September, and it's got a lot to live up to.

Can you tell what this is?

Straight down from the drone, this timber frame looks like a blueprint come to life. Three weeks earlier it was just steel — now it's shaping the new upper floor, master suite and balcony, cantilevering out over the Hillsborough view.

Building on a slope adds its own challenges. This is what it looks like when the engineering works.

Give it a few more weeks.

Rewind to 2022 — one of the David Reid Homes showhomes that helped shape what we build today.

Warm timber, considered lighting, a bathroom that feels more like a retreat than a room. The kind of details that don't go out of style.

As we count down to the doors opening on our newest showhome this September, we wanted to look back at where the story began.

It's been a while since we checked in on this one — plenty's happened since demo day. Building on the Port Hills means the ground rarely does you any favours: the original masonry foundation had to be assessed, strengthened and readied to carry a much bigger home above it — new underpinning pads tying into the existing perimeter footing, a fresh course of block laid on top.

Today: the pump reaching in over the retaining wall to fill it all in. Not the most glamorous stage, but the one everything else depends on — especially on a sloping site like this.

Next up — watching the frame go up.

The whiteboard tells you more than any site meeting could.

Half the jobs crossed off, half still waiting. Skylights, GIB blocking, joist H-in, scaffold dates — the sequence of a hundred small decisions that have to happen in the right order for the big ones to hold up later.

It's not glamorous. But it's the difference between a build that comes together and one that doesn't.

This is the moment we've been waiting to show you. That curve we spotted in the foundations back in February has become a genuine architectural feature, a sweeping curved wall that runs through the heart of this home. It's the kind of detail that takes real skill to get right, and one of the things that makes this build genuinely architecturally designed rather than a standard floor plan.

Some recognition worth revisiting. In 2023 our Highsted build took home Gold House of the Year. It's a standard we hold every build to, whether it's in the running for an award or not. Proud of this one, then and now.
