The Verdict: Humans: 1. Algorithms: 0. We’re still more efficient at delivering reality... for how long do you think? 🤔

A client from Canyon View Domes recently confessed they took our exact design brief and fed it into an AI generator to see if they could outsmart our $4,000 3D modelling & rendering fee.

The results? AI generated some breathtaking, hyper-futuristic eye candy in roughly 45 seconds.

There was just one minor issue: Gravity. The AI created a stunning masterpiece featuring gravity-defying pillars, a roof that ignored the laws of physics, and a floor plan with zero concept of human plumbing. It turns out AI is incredible at hallucinating pretty pictures, but humans are still significantly better at designing spaces you can actually live in.

Ending the working week on a high note. It’s hard to imagine a better Friday afternoon than doing a site visit for our newest project and taking in this incredible view. We design spaces to harmonize with these landscapes, and seeing it come to life never gets old.
Have a beautiful and restful weekend, everyone.

From render to reality. We can’t wait to see this home composed of sustainable CLT panels.
The brief? A seamless blend of European efficiency and Japanese minimalism. Clean, practical, and deeply rooted in a warm, natural feel.
Enjoy the animation of this cross-cultural home coming to life.

One of our favourite projects so far.

This home brings together European style proportions, a calm and cohesive material scheme, and a well considered insulation strategy to create a house that feels both timeless and comfortable. Simple, sleek, and carefully resolved, this is the kind of architecture that does not need to shout.

Could you see yourself living in a home like this?

If you missed our blog post about Nabaraku Lodge in Hakuba, Japan — a project Minimal Design was heavily involved in — here are some additional photos from this stylish, cosy mountain hideaway.

Minimal design isn’t about what you remove — it’s about what you intentionally keep. That belief sits at the heart of Nabaraku Lodge, a private alpine retreat in Hakuba, Nagano, where Minimal Design was proud to be part of the project.

Set in the dramatic landscape of Japan’s Northern Alps, Nabaraku was conceived not as a hotel, but as a home — a place designed for presence, warmth, and meaningful connection to both people and place.

We just dropped a new blog post all about Nabaraku Lodge — a warm, minimal alpine retreat we were proud to be part of in Hakuba, Japan’s Northern Alps.

It’s not just architecture — it’s about designing spaces that feel like home, rooted in nature, presence, and calm. From thoughtful material choices to serene spaces for living and resting, this project reflects what mindful design can truly be.

Thinking about a granny flat? Now is the time.

New rules mean you can build a standalone granny flat up to 70 m² without a building consent, as long as requirements are met.

What this unlocks:

-> Faster path from idea to build
-> Lower upfront costs and less red tape
-> Ideal for rental income, multigenerational living, or adding property value

What still matters:

-> Smart, compliant design
-> Correct documentation and PIM
-> Experienced professionals from day one

At Minimal Design, we help you design it right the first time — compliant, build-ready, and tailored to your site.

Canyon View Domes, Alexandra, New Zealand
Perched on a rugged canyon face, these geodesic domes are all about big views, light footprint, and simple living done well. Elevated platforms, wrap around decks, and a clean interior that keeps the focus on the landscape.

We have just applied for Building Consent, so fingers crossed for a smooth sail from here. Massive thanks to the Minimal Design team for pushing this forward, and kudos to a brave client for backing an experimental idea and trusting the process. We are keen to keep supporting the project with strong ideas and smart, buildable solutions.

More to come soon as we move through consent and into the next stage of visuals.
