NO you have not missed out on our tuber sale!

YES we are still having one

We’ve just looked at our month ahead and decided that we need to take some time to start getting our own tubers in the ground next week… otherwise we’ll have no dahlia flowers to sell in Feb (and we aim to have loads for Valentines Day)

So stay tuned…

P.S. we still have good supplies of quite a few - not that the weren’t popular the first time around…they just turned out to be excellent tuber producers and easy to divide. This includes 2 of your favourites…Gentle Dawn and Bubbly Barb!

So it seems Flora’s Sandy’s Mojo is hot property at the moment! I’ve been inundated with requests for her…

We’ve got a few more tubers that we’ll be adding to our upcoming tuber sale, but there’s definitely not enough to go around.

Sorry if you miss out, but if you are patient, there are so many more lovely new varieties waiting in the wings for next years release.

Just a fuzzy-haired squinty-eyed flower farmer trying to take a half decent selfie with a massive bunch of tulips!

And just dropping on to the grid to say that tulips are DONE (for this year anyway)

I miss them already, but that’s a good thing. Imagine if they were available all year - then they wouldn’t be so special…

I’ve already got a few ideas about how our tulips crop might look a bit different next year 🌷which is just as well because it’s only a few months until I have to order the bulbs 💡

Well the dahlia pre-orders are all accounted for, and this Flower Farmer is feeling slightly shattered…

…but the ‘volunteer flower farmer’ has decided we should now have a sale of our remaining tubers 🫣

Fair enough for him to make this call I guess…he did dig, wash, stamp and make up boxes for all those dahlias…and he definitely doesn’t want me planting them all and hoeing up new beds to fit them in.

So it looks like we’re having a tuber sale, and we’ll be able to deliver in time for that magical Labour Weekend planting date.

Not quite sure when we’ll have it (because the volunteer flower farmer has gone on a little road trip and I need him to check my website which has suddenly started sending confirmation emails that end up in spam folders)

So if you’re on my email list, you’ll be the first to hear when (it will be later this week)

And yes, there is more stock of a few of our sold out varieties…

If you’ve landed up on my page because you heard I sell ranunculus seedlings, (maybe you saw it on Kate - Dahlia Tuber & Flower Grower NZ post) then let me explain further…

Yes I sell ranunculus seedlings to both home gardeners and commercial flower growers

🌱 Home gardener sized seedlings are available around late April in 6 packs, couriered anywhere in NZ. This is though my MY PATCH business MY PATCH

🌱 seedlings for commercial flower growers (people who are growing to sell - minimum order of approximately 600 plants,) get preordered now, a deposit gets paid, and seedlings get delivered in April or May

So if you’re a home gardener and want to try ranunculus next year, the best thing to do is hop across to the mypatchnz account and follow along there. You can also find the mypatch.co.nz website and join the club (our email list sign up which is at the bottom of every website page)

And if you’re a commercial flower growers, then head to the flora flowers website where there is a seedling brokerage page. You can request to be added to the commercial email list from there.

P.S. No I don’t grow the seedlings myself - I get a seedling specialist nursery to do that as there are hundreds and hundreds of trays!

Yes it’s confusing wearing different business hats! I have 4 distinct arms to my business, and each has its own dedicated email list that you can sign up for.

1. The tulip list (locals only)
2. The dahlia tuber list (NZ only)
3. The cut flower seedling brokerage list (NZ commercial flower farmers)
4. The My Patch list (NZ home gardeners)

It’s a bit of work to manage, but we do it so that you’re only getting emails about products that are relevant or available to you (there’s no point emailing someone in Invercargill details about how to buy our tulips!)

So if I mention that I’ve sent an email out, I usually say which group it’s for…it’s never just a blanket email to everyone who’s ever signed up for anything!

Just a PSA because my inbox gets full of people telling me they didn’t receive the email I mentioned…

Yes I still have some epic seedlings fails even though I have started probably millions of seeds!

Flowers are quite particular about their germination requirements, and if you don’t get it exactly right - this is sometimes the result!

These are Larkspur…one of the trickier seeds to get through to seedling size. And that’s why I unashamedly get the experts to grow my larkspur for my flower crops (along with my delphiniums, campanula, poppies, lisianthus…and quite a few others)

And if you’re a commercial flower grower in NZ, I can organise the experts to grow seedlings for you as well, and get them couriered to your door (or the door of a friend if you live rurally!)

If you’re on our email list, we’ve just sent out the Ranunculus, Anemone and Colibri Poppy order forms, so check your emails and let me know if it didn’t turn up…

How’s this for a sales pitch - come and buy our underwhelming tulips!

Yes that’s right…we want you to be underwhelmed when you pick up your tulips.

Our goal is to let YOU experience the joy of seeing these magical blooms open and continue to grow at home in your vase (and trust us - they open quickly!)

So we harvest them at the bud stage, chill them in our chiller, then wrap them tight to keep their stems nice and straight.

So if they look underwhelming, then we’ve done a great job and you’re going to get all the magic happening before your eyes.

And why should you trust us with this…because we’ve been growing and selling tulips for 8 years 🌷

The first tulip harvest of the season deserves its own celebration 🎉

It’s the start of the frantic part of our flower year - our tulips get harvested twice a day and need to be dealt with straight away. Luckily the season starts with a trickle of tulips before the main crop arrives in what feels like a deluge.

We’re also running about 3-4 weeks later than our crop last year. We started planting the bulbs about a week later, and our Winter has been much colder than we are used to here in the north, so they have been keeping us waiting.

Thanks to all of you who have messaged looking for where you can buy our tulips. It’s great to know so many locals are wanting to get their hands on locally grown flowers. We’re still a few days (maybe a week) from having excess tulips that we can sell in bunches (because we have a few standing orders that get top priority)

The best way to stay in the loop about where and how to purchase our tulips is to sign up to our email list. We promise not to pester you with emails - maybe 1 or 2 a week for the next 6 weeks while we have tulips to brighten up your life. We don’t ship our tulips, so obviously you need to live (or work) in the Warkworth/Matakana region (or have family that does - they make a great surprise treat!)

P.S. the first variety we have flowering is ‘Avant Garde’ - it opens to a dreamy pale lemon, and is a peony type with plenty of petals.

Do you ever make inconvenient deadlines for yourself?

I promised myself (and my accountant) that I would finalise my tax stuff before I harvested any tulips…and now that’s a bit of a problem because the tulips are ready and the tax isn’t done!

So just bare with me while I sort my tax paperwork, and then we’ll rock on into tulip season 🌷

P.S. I procrastinate over my tax every year, and when I sit down to sort the necessary bits of info for the accountant it never takes very long. So why do I make it this big scary job in my head … 🤷‍♀️

And if you’re reading this Christine…expect a tax email from me tomorrow!
