If you thought the Medina logo looks a little different, you’re right. It now features Bab Mansour—an ancient historical monument from the city where my parents grew up and where I spent most of my life in Morocco.
Known as the gate built to “rival the moon,” Bab Mansour was completed in 1732. As the Sultan’s final grand project, it was designed to be the most beautiful gate in Africa.
While many are fascinated by what Marrakech and Fez have to offer, standing before the glorious Bab Mansour at the edge of the Kasbah makes you realize this Imperial City has a magic all its own. Walking through the Medina of Meknes feels like stepping directly into an 18th-century fever dream. The facade is draped in zellij mosaics and green glazed tiles that glow differently with every passing hour, while the marble columns—repurposed from the Roman ruins of Volubilis—perfectly frame this masterpiece.
