The Dulux 2027 colour forecast was released in Wellington today. These events are super inspiring. I can tell you that homeowners are REALLY wanting more colour in their homes right now. Gone are the days of white walls and ceilings - or even just coloured walls and white ceilings. When I say colour, it may be muted or neutral tones - or it might be bold or playful or even high contrast - but people are over white. Straight after this I headed to Johnsonville for a colour consultation at another home where Black White has done its time. We’re going to be colour drenching some rooms, colour capping ceilings in others, and in some cases just painting ceilings with neutral walls. Here are some of the new palettes laid out at the event this morning teamed with stunning foliage, and some palettes together for inspiration. Note the increasing use of blue, warm muddy oranges and brick tones, green has more yellow undertones - and oh those rich reds and pinks. I do love my job! When you’re an interior designer, you often find yourself being asked for advice from friends and neighbours. This home belongs to both, and today I popped by to see the results. Previously dark and bland, this entrance hallway now reflects the stylish home owner. I ordered this wallpaper, which she’d long admired, from overseas and we drenched it from the top of the panelling across the ceiling. It is perfect in the entrance; it feels like you’re walking beneath a canopy of branches. The timber panelling had previously been an orangey wood tone, which we painted out to soften and lighten the area. So stunning now, rather hard to photograph, and an illustration of what paint, wallpaper and a conversation or two between stylish friends can achieve!

Over the past year, at the beginning of each new project, I’ve worked with my client to establish 3 words to describe how they want their home/room to FEEL. The owner of this gorgeous home was the first I used this idea with. Her words came easily - they were: Uplifting, Calm and Social Conversation. Every decision we made was filtered through these words. The finished result totally nailed it. The family love the feeling of their living room - so much so that they’re using it more. The curved sofa, the chairs that move to create different living spaces, the custom round rug, the colours…. Calm, uplifting and social. I now have a long list of words I send people to select from, and the answers differ quite a lot - which goes to show why our interiors need to be unique to ourselves.

This living area is a triumph of great spatial planning and clever furniture selection. Sandwiched between a dining area, window seat and entrance way, this space was both a thoroughfare and much-needed seating area. I selected a stunning John Kovacs curved settee, had a rug custom-made, but the pièce de résistance is these two montreux swivel chairs on castors. They are the firm family favorite now, travelling daily between the settee and window seat area. Even the dog is happy!

This beautiful design will soon transform my client’s central Wellington apartment. In the 18 years since the building was built, little has changed, and my client called me in for a re-design. Subtle green walls will replace beige; sheer drapes will add softness where till now there have been roller blinds; large custom-bordered and sized rugs will add comfort; and new furniture has been selected for comfort - upholstered in gorgeous fabrics and injecting colours she loves. The kitchen is also getting a semi-makeover with better storage and these beautiful tiles. Our homes do really nurture us when they are designed well - and this one will do just that!

If I wasn’t an interior designer, I’d like to design garden rooms. I love gardening, and clients are often on the receiving end of my advice on what to plant outside the windows! After all, your outside is just an extension to your rooms, and the same design principles apply. I have two exterior landscape projects on the go at present. This one is for a client for whom I’ve designed her interior, and now I’m selecting exterior furniture and materials for a large outside living-pool area. I visited this property in the snow on Monday (amazingly the hardy landscapers were still at work) Now’s a great time to get furniture ordered and planting in - the spring bulbs are making their presence felt!

This beautiful main bedroom is from my Island Bay project. A week or so ago I mentioned how I steer clear of white walls in south-facing rooms and instead favour saturated or warm tones. This room is also south-facing, but testament to being able to use blue so long it has green undertones for warmth and is saturated enough not to read as cold. The warmth also comes through in the vintage furniture and art - I just love these original bedsides. Given the shortage of table top space, I specified small wall lights for reading. This home was fully renovated, and we retained a beautiful ceiling rose which draws the eye up. I had large-scale linen drum lights made the same for all the bedrooms. And these elegant cream linen curtains provide softness. With a footpath just outside this room, the sheers offer both privacy while allowing in enough light. A beautiful home and a showcase of blue used beautifully.

During my in-home interior design consultations I often get asked what to select when it comes to bathroom materials. Bathroom renovations are a big investment and need to last at least decade - and so it’s super important to stay well clear of trends. Tiles go in and out of fashion quicker than you think - so I always advise staying well clear of any tile in a trend colour or shape. My second piece of advice is to lean in to the architecture and style of your home instead. You can always add personality with towels and styling items. This bathroom is one that will endure. I used large-format non-descript floor tiles and simple subways on the wall. This is a guest bathroom and in order to keep costs down, we only tiled where required. What makes this bathroom sing is the details and that’s where we invested - the mirror, wall lights, stool, tapware, wall hooks and vanity. We also re-glazed the lower windows with narrow reeded glass for privacy and fitted new double glazed windows. The result is timeless, with style and simple elegance that will endure. 👌

This elegant bathroom had the finishing touches added this week. I love its simplicity and calmness. I colour-drenched it in a very soft green to make the slanted ceiling and window recede. Matt-green tiles wrap around a walk in shower area the width of the room with a built-in shelf the length of this wall. I removed the bath to open the space, and enlarged the vanity to add storage. The finishing touches are absolutely the jewellery: lighting, furniture and the mirror add interest and elevate the design. Before photos illustrate how far this bathroom has come. It was particularly hard to photograph, with light pouring through the windows on photo day. The colours and style were designed to tie in with the rest of my client’s home. She and I are delighted with the result. Thanks to my bathroom builders iwillconstruct for making it happen seamlessly - as always.
