Such a pretty room. 🤍

This guest bedroom is part of a recently completed home renovation in Kelburn. The window furnishings and colour palette were curated by The Room Editor, layered with beautiful furniture and furnishings my clients have collected over many years — each piece with its own story.

It’s already welcomed many guests in its first couple of months, all of whom have understandably loved their stay. The best guest rooms feel like a little retreat from the everyday. Thoughtfully layered, super comfortable, a place you feel truly looked after.

What an extraordinary exhibition: Cornelia Parker at the Wellington City Gallery. Today is the first anniversary of my dear dad passing away, and I’d been thinking for a while about how I’d commemorate this day. I decided that on this day each year I’ll head to an art exhibition. Dad and I really loved visiting art galleries together, he fostered my love of art and doing art, is one reason I am a designer - and one day I’ll start doing art again too! This exhibition is absolutely fabulous - head along to the City Gallery Wellington Te Whare Toi and check it out - on till March.

As a colour consultant, I regularly get exteriors rendered (coloured-in) for home owners so you have peace of mind before you commit - exterior painting is too pricey and impactful for guess work. With this home, the new weatherboard colour was straightforward but the homeowner loves colour (all colours), so I had the entrance door rendered with four hues to illustrate the different options - all worked… but Dulux Sunbound was always going to be the winner! Such a stunning day in the Capital, couldn’t help feeling sunbound ☀️

I presented this design scheme to a lovely Hataitai client today who approached me to finish her home which had been largely renovated but left undecorated. It’s been a pleasure working these design elements in with the beautiful new kitchen, and layering in furniture, lighting, soft furnishings, wallpaper, rugs and curtains - for two living areas and a hallway. I know this is going to be fabulous, and thought I’d share a video of the various materials layered up before I handed them all over!

If you’re needing your home to feel warm and homely (and who doesn’t?) one way is to add a vintage item or two. While a home filled with beautiful new objects is gorgeous, there’s nothing like the petina and individuality of an older piece. Plenty of people have pieces passed on to them. But if not, there’s fabulous stores to visit - these pieces are favs spotted at Haunt and La Voûte - Christchurch on Saturday in Christchurch. Absolutely wonderful shops, brimming with inspiration.

This room is a great example of good spatial planning. It used to be a large open-plan home-business workroom. My client needed it to become a spare bedroom and asked me to help make it into one. We had The Joinery King make a timber wall divider to screen off the bedroom section, and then I installed stunning drapes for added texture, interest, and evening darkness. The resulting room feels restful, and now serves as a small living area plus lovely bedroom.

The Dulux 2027 colour forecast was released in Wellington today. These events are super inspiring. I can tell you that homeowners are REALLY wanting more colour in their homes right now. Gone are the days of white walls and ceilings - or even just coloured walls and white ceilings. When I say colour, it may be muted or neutral tones - or it might be bold or playful or even high contrast - but people are over white. Straight after this I headed to Johnsonville for a colour consultation at another home where Black White has done its time. We’re going to be colour drenching some rooms, colour capping ceilings in others, and in some cases just painting ceilings with neutral walls. Here are some of the new palettes laid out at the event this morning teamed with stunning foliage, and some palettes together for inspiration. Note the increasing use of blue, warm muddy oranges and brick tones, green has more yellow undertones - and oh those rich reds and pinks. I do love my job! When you’re an interior designer, you often find yourself being asked for advice from friends and neighbours. This home belongs to both, and today I popped by to see the results. Previously dark and bland, this entrance hallway now reflects the stylish home owner. I ordered this wallpaper, which she’d long admired, from overseas and we drenched it from the top of the panelling across the ceiling. It is perfect in the entrance; it feels like you’re walking beneath a canopy of branches. The timber panelling had previously been an orangey wood tone, which we painted out to soften and lighten the area. So stunning now, rather hard to photograph, and an illustration of what paint, wallpaper and a conversation or two between stylish friends can achieve!

Over the past year, at the beginning of each new project, I’ve worked with my client to establish 3 words to describe how they want their home/room to FEEL. The owner of this gorgeous home was the first I used this idea with. Her words came easily - they were: Uplifting, Calm and Social Conversation. Every decision we made was filtered through these words. The finished result totally nailed it. The family love the feeling of their living room - so much so that they’re using it more. The curved sofa, the chairs that move to create different living spaces, the custom round rug, the colours…. Calm, uplifting and social. I now have a long list of words I send people to select from, and the answers differ quite a lot - which goes to show why our interiors need to be unique to ourselves.
