About ModMen

We’ve been restoring since the 70’s*
ModMen was formed in 2016 by Cam after a lifelong passion for collecting and restoring antique and mid-century furniture. The son of a coach builder/cabinet maker Cam’s first major restoration project was a timber P-Class Yacht with his Father at the age of 7 in (1979*) sanding, fibre glassing, remaking damaged parts, gluing and re-finishing. Af

ter working with his father in the building industry he moved to Hamilton Nimmo & Sons the agents for Steinway pianos in Wellington as a Piano technician and restorer. They use only the best timbers such as Rosewood, Burr Walnut and Mahogany & the most skilled trades’ people in each industry are sought by manufacturers in their building, cabinetry, refinishing and design. He eventually moved onto Piano Workshop primarily as a Polisher and sales person, working on and re-polishing many hundreds of instruments in both French polish, lacquer and modern gloss finishes. Some of these instruments can be in the $50,000+ range so quality craftsmanship and attention to detail were always imperative. After that he established a new Piano business and workshop which employed many staff and in the end was heavily management focussed which took him away from his true passion. More recently Cam’s been involved in the fit out of some of Wellington’s finest bars and restoring pieces for his personal collection and leading design stores. Modmen Furniture Restoration is taking Cam back to his true calling. Restoring the past for our future
ModMen are passionate specialist in restoration, re polishing and refurbishment of mid-century modern, antique and traditional furniture. As every piece has of furniture has a unique style & provenance we’re skilled at recognising and assessing each item to ensure that it’s finished sympathetically back to original without damaging value or integrity. Alternatively if your designer or eye tells you, on request we can colour match an item to something else. As dictated by your item(s) of original finish and timber, ModMen use a range of techniques from spray finishing, French/hand polishing and Scandinavian teak oil methods sympathetic to the original intentions of the maker. We successfully achieve a range of finishes from Matte, Satin and full Mirror gloss, as well as traditional by hand artisan finishes including French Polish for all your antiques and treasured items, maintaining and in most cases improving their value. We’ve just completed the restoration of this iconic Herman Miller Eames armchair.

The moulded plywood had begun to delaminate, so we carefully repaired the layers, spliced in new timber where needed, and refinished the chair to closely match its original factory appearance.

Another classic brought back to life.

When the puppy likes the sofa 🐶🐾

This Don sofa chair arrived with a chewed arm after an enthusiastic puppy decided it looked tasty

Rather than filling the damage, we cut away the tasty timber and spliced in a new section using 100-year-old recycled mahogany from our timber stock. Matching the grain, colour and strength is just as important as the repair itself.

Now comes the fun part… shaping it entirely by hand. No CNC. No templates. Just traditional hand tools, builders pencil, careful measuring, and a fair bit of eyeballing with several coffee’s until the new timber disappears into the original.

When we’re finished, the repair should be almost impossible to spot.

Stay tuned for the finished result.

We’ve just repaired this vintage water damaged tea trolley.
The bottom shelf had badly delaminated so we made a new one, then matched and polished everything back to an original finish.

10 Years of ModMen

According to Facebook, we’ve officially hit the big one — 10 years in business

More than anything, this is a thank you.

We’re a small but passionate team, with a deep appreciation for great design. Never rushed, but always moving — because true restoration takes time, care, and respect. Craftsmanship has been in the blood for generations, long before ModMen was even a name.

Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of working on thousands of pieces, each with its own story, each restored with care and precision.

To our incredible team — past and present — thank you for your skill, pride, and dedication.
To the best suppliers and contractors in the game — thank you for helping us deliver work to the standard we believe in.
To our peers in the industry — we see you, and we wish you every success.
And to the thousands of clients who’ve trusted us with their pieces — thank you. Your support means everything.

We don’t take any of it for granted.

Here’s to continuing the work, the stories, and the craft.

— The ModMen Team

Who doesn’t love chocolate at Easter… especially when it looks like this

Our friends at Featherston Tavern wanted their bar top brought back to life — and we’ve gone all in on those rich, chocolatey tones 🍫

This beauty was:
• Fully stripped back
• Carefully prepped and repaired
• Custom stained to blend seamlessly with the existing bar
• Finished with the first sealer coat (just wait till it’s fully built up 👌)

The grain is now popping with that deep, warm, cocoa glow — smooth, rich, and ready for many more rounds 🍻

If your bar, table, or furniture is looking a bit tired… we can bring it back to life too.

We’ve just finished restoring this beautiful set of 8 Otto Larsen dining chairs — and what a transformation.

These came to us tired and worn, but with great bones. We’ve:
• Carefully repolished the timber to bring back that rich mid-century warmth
• Spliced in new timber where needed to strengthen and preserve the frames
• Repaired damaged areas and refinished throughout
• Installed new timber buttons to match the original detailing
• Finished with fresh black upholstery for a clean, modern contrast

The result — a stunning set ready for another few decades of life.

This is the kind of work we love — respecting the original design while giving it a new lease on life.
