In World War II, the 28th Māori Battalion marched into Europe singing “Ake! Ake! Kia kaha e!”. Their strength and resilience continue to inspire us, and this year, their spirit lives on as we celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with the theme ‘Ake Ake Ake - A Forever Language.’
This theme honours the enduring resilience of te reo Māori, a taonga that we continue to protect and grow.
As we reflect on the importance of te reo, let’s also remember 14 September 1972, the day the Māori Language Petition was delivered to parliament with over 30,000 signatures in support of te reo. This day marked a turning point in the revitalisation of te reo, and since then, it’s become an integral part of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori.
Te reo Māori is here to stay and it’s up to all of us to carry it forward. We're pleased to share the dates for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori are 14-20 September 2025.
