Not at the Whanganui River Markets today unfortunately.
The scariest thing about bad weather can be the thought of carvings being blown off the table. Hitting the road and getting damaged after hours of work.
I have decided to work from home today and keep everything safe.
It can be 50 50 some days and I always feel its a tough decision to make. Wind and a car park setting definitely puts me on high alert.
So.. if you want to visit and see the studio and carvings
Drop into :
28 Alexander st.
Whanganui
Go to the sign at the back gate and ring the bell. I will let you in. The cat will expect a pat most likely. If it's not asleep.
Eftpos available and quite a few new carvings in the cabinet too.
Restrings can be dropped off or picked up today also.
Open from 9am till 1pm.
Marty.

Good news!
So as not to seem greedy, I have made another Antler button hook for the cabinet.
This will be priced and ready for sale very soon.
It's got some great colours and its own shape due to the fact that no two Buttons are the same.

It's time for an active break. mixing full-time creativity and markets doesn't leave much time for weekend getaways so we go when opportunities come up. Rain or sunshine as if we wait, we miss out!
I trust you will all be ok, and all be very good while I am on my bike with Kate mid-week for the two-day 85k timber trail. No electric cheat bikes for us so it should be a great challenge.

Bone prep!
The job most people don't want to do.
Tips: take your time because it takes time.
Don't cut yourself. Be careful.
Don't ask someone who has just spent days preparing bone to sell you some bone. Lol
That's the most common thing that happens.
I'm NOT selling mine.
Clean soak rince and repeat until you stop seeing oil in the water and in the bone.
Don't be stingy with the dishwashing liquid. It breaks down the oil.
I don't boil the bones. It's fast, but it leaves the bone brittle and often with cracks and splits you don't find until you are polishing or when your carving breaks!!
Lastly, I use a chilly bin not a bucket. This keeps the heat in and allows more time for the oil to come out.
Get at it carvers. Especially if you have been putting it off.

It's that time again for the Whanganui River Markets this Saturday.
I'll be there with my carvings and this new little feather.
It's 60mm long by 20mm wide made from beef bone with a drab 4 braid adjustable cord.
I spent my time to make this look simple and clean but with lines that feel so nice and give some great visual detail. Front and back.
"Feathers found" can represent a message form a loved one or just remind us to fly when we get those opportunities.
I like both options. You may have your own meaning for it too.
It will go onto the website next week if it doesn't fly away to a new home at the market. $180.00
See you there, be early if you are feeling you would like to make this yours.
Whatever you do, do it well and have a great weekend.
Marty.

My thoughts today as I work with my camara to show the essence of my bone carvings.
What does the carving mean?
Is a better question: How does it make you feel, act or gain connection?
Is a hook lucky, or does it open you up to seeing possibilities?
We all have the neck to hang things on but to really understand, can we take on more than just the image.
Can we go beyond and act with the intention of that Taonga and better ourselves.
Do we hold ourselves to the intentions brought by the giver or maker and the beautiful culture we share.
Or is it just a pretty thing?
