MYTH: Interior designers are “just decorators.”

Sure, I can decorate your home… but I prefer the word styling.
We decorate Christmas trees. We decorate for Halloween.

Interior design goes so much deeper than that.

In reality, interior designers are more like interior architects — thoughtfully planning how a home will actually function for the people living in it.

Personally?
I want to be involved BEFORE a pencil even hits paper.

Because great design is about so much more than choosing pretty finishes. It’s about solving problems before they happen and creating a home that makes daily life easier, smoother, and less frustrating.

For example:
• Why is the light switch behind the door?
• Why does the laundry room feel awkward to use?
• Why does the microwave placement make cooking more annoying than it needs to be?

These little things matter.

The washing machine should go on the left and the dryer on the right because of how the doors swing open.
Microwave doors swing open to the left, so placing one in a tight right-hand corner makes it less accessible.

Thoughtful design is noticing the details most people overlook — until they live with them every single day.

✨ A New Chapter ✨

While the Island Design retail store has closed its doors, my passion for creating beautiful spaces is just getting started. 🌴🩵

For those who don’t know me..
I’m Kellie, an interior designer based in Isla Colon, Bocas del Toro. I am a true Canadian 🇨🇦, but I love the beach and warm weather! I have worked mostly in new home construction for home builders in Calgary and Victoria. I have also been a Kitchen & Bath Designer, Architectural Coordinator, Stone & Tile salesperson. I’ve owned and operated a general contracting business with my husband Guy. I have tried on many hats in the design and construction industry for the past 21 years! There is no challenge too big for me to handle!
