It was a tough choice to turn away from a well-paying position and face the challenges of making ends meet. I even resorted to selling the pandesal I baked by go
ing around town. Although it was a struggle, I fought through it. While my mind urged me to return to work abroad, my heart insisted on staying with my family. To make the most of the rented space for selling pandesal, I came up with the idea of selling street-side BBQ, kebabs, and smoked BBQ in the afternoons. I found food-safe steel drums and built two smoker grillers, which gained significant attention after people tasted the BBQ. This marked the beginning of my journey. Having noticed that many homes in the US had BBQ grills or smokers in their yards, I developed a fascination for them. I followed custom building TV shows and watched replays, never expecting that it would lead me to a similar line of work in the Philippines—upcycling and custom building smokers and grills from barrel drums. When we posted pictures of our first two barrel grillers online, people showed great interest. Soon after, food park owners reached out to us through Facebook, asking if they could purchase those two grillers. Initially, we declined, but their persistence convinced us to build new ones. We saw it as an opportunity to help, thinking it would be just two grillers. Little did we know that this was only the beginning. Referrals from our first clients started pouring in, and BarrelProPh was born. As the orders continued to come in, my wife and I discussed how this might be an answer to our prayers—a way for me to stay with my family instead of going back abroad. To this day, we have upcycled countless barrel drums and wood crates since 2016. Through research and client suggestions, we have gradually innovated our designs.
