How to Teach your Pre-Kinder to Read

1. Start with Sounds (Not Letters First)

Teach letter sounds (phonics), not just names.

Example:

A = “ah” (apple)
B = “buh” (ball)

👉 Tip: Use songs, flashcards, or toys. Make it fun, not forced.

2. Introduce the Alphabet Gradually

Don’t rush A–Z in one go.

Focus on 2–3 letters per week
Mix uppercase and lowercase
Always connect to objects (A = apple, B = ball)
3. Practice Phonemic Awareness

Help your child hear sounds in words.

Try:

“What sound does cat start with?” → /k/
Clap syllables: “ba-na-na” (3 claps)

👉 This builds a strong reading foundation.

4. Blend Simple Sounds

Once they know some sounds, start blending:

C + A + T = cat
B + A + T = bat

👉 Keep it short and simple (3-letter words first).

5. Introduce Sight Words

These are common words they memorize by sight.
