BUSINESS: AWG Group to invest P400M on sports hubs
The Augusto W. Go (AWG) Group is investing at least P400 million to construct Cebu’s largest sports facility in Barangay Apas and renovate the iconic 60-year-old Cebu Coliseum in downtown Cebu.
These developments aim to meet the rising demand for indoor sports hubs and strengthen Cebu’s reputation as a premier sports tourism destination in the Philippines.
AWG Group founder and chairman, lawyer Augusto W. Go, announced the establishment of the three-story Magnum Sports Complex within the 1.5-hectare Treewoods Residences in Sitio San Miguel, Apas, Cebu City.
The P300-million state-of-the-art facility, adjacent to Cebu IT Park, is expected to be completed by March of this year.
Go, who has played a key role in developing sports facilities such as Patria de Cebu, YMCA, and the Cebu Coliseum, recognizes the growing market for modernized sports venues. He attributes this demand to the increasing interest of the younger generation in sports and wellness.
As the holding company of University of Cebu, UC Med, Aspac Bank, and other businesses, AWG Group is expanding its footprint in sports facility investments.
Go believes these ventures will not only enhance Cebu’s sports ecosystem but also contribute to economic growth by generating jobs and attracting the sports tourism market.
Magnum Sports Complex will feature three FIBA-standard basketball courts with Taraflex flooring and a tennis court with Tiger Turf flooring on the ground floor. The courts meet international standards set by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) for professional competitions.
Other amenities include: Ten badminton courts with Taraflex flooring, two of which can be converted into pickleball courts, A yoga studio, game arcade, sports bar, restaurant, gym, dance studio, lockers, and showers, Wall climbing facilities, a golf simulator, a salon and spa, and a snack bar 30 food kiosks and 104 total parking spaces
Cebu Coliseum’s P100-Million Modernization
After over six decades, the Cebu Coliseum is set to undergo a major facelift, with over P100 million allocated for its modernization.
The renovation will transform the facility into a fully air-conditioned indoor sports hub, featuring another FIBA-approved basketball court.
Go also emphasized plans to expand parking spaces while preserving the historical significance of the Cebu Coliseum.
He assured that the iconic signage will remain, and no tenants will be displaced due to the renovations.
These ambitious projects reflect AWG Group’s commitment to advancing Cebu’s sports and tourism sectors, paving the way for world-class facilities and supporting the development of future athletes.
