LPG SAFETY
LPG safety is everybody’s concern. Both the LPG user and the supplier should work together to ensure the safety of the LPG installation.

In case of fire, DO NOT PANIC! By reacting calmly to the situation, you will be able to think clearly and save lives and property. The following are suggestions to ensure safe use of LPG:

DOs:
1. LPG installations should be situated at ground level or above-ground level and should be well-ventilated.
2. Check your LPG pipelines or hoses for wear, cracks or leaks regularly by applying soap and water with a sponge over the length of the pipeline/hose, especially around joints. Bubbles will appear if there are leaks in the piping system. You will also notice a pungent smell similar to that of a rotten egg in case of an LPG leak.
3. When an LPG leak is detected, immediately cut-off LPG supply and notify your LPG supplier.
4. Open all windows and doors to bring in fresh air and dilute the LPG/air mixture. Remember that LPG will not ignite if the LPG concentration in the air is below 10%.
5. Refrain from turning on/off lights, electric fans, etc. or connect/disconnect them from source to prevent sparks from occurring, until the LPG smell is gone or is already very faint.
6. Isolate leaking tanks from flammable materials. Notify your LPG supplier to retrieve and take possession of the leaking tanks for proper disposal.
7. Close the valves to the stoves, burners or any LPG appliances when not in use.

DON’Ts
1. Do not locate your LPG tanks in enclosed space or below ground elevation as this will lead to accumulation of gas in case of a leak.
2. Keep LPG tanks away from electric outlets and other sources of ignition.
3. Do not use candles, lighters or open flame to check for leaks.
4. In case of leaks or fire, do not leave the LPG source open. Immediately close the valve in the tank or remove the regulator to stop the flow of LPG. Shut-off valves are installed in commercial applications to provide immediately accessible supply cut-off facility.
5. Do not tamper with any LPG installation or transfer LPG from one tank to another unless you are qualified to do so. Never invert LPG cylinder or let it lie horizontally on the floor.
6. Do not place or store clothing and waste materials on top of the LPG tank.
7. Do not store LPG cylinders with flammable materials or near corrosive chemicals.

LPG BASICS
LPG is the general term for Liquified Petroleum Gas. Petron Corporation, the largest LPG supplier in the country, sells it under the brand name GASUL.

LPG is a mixture of Propane, C3H8 (between 30% to 40%) and Butane, C4H10 (between 60% to 70%). It is heavier than air but lighter than water. When newly - filled, or when you buy it from your retailer, the LPG tank contains 80% liquid LPG and 20% gas. When used properly, LPG is one of the safest fuel for cooking, heating and other industrial uses.

LPG is colorless and odorless. However, an odorant (called ethyl mercaptan) is added to alert the user in case of leaks thus, helping prevent accidental fire.

LPG is sold either in Bulk (where it is metered) for large commercial applications or in Bottles or Cylinders (where it is weighed) for household and for small to medium commercial requirements. All Petron LPG cylinders have their Tare Weight painted on the cylinders to indicate the weight of the empty cylinders. For example, the Tare Weight painted on an 11kg Gasul tank is 13.10kg. The total weight of this tank, when newly – filled, should be 24.1kg (13.1kg for the weight of the empty cylinder plus 11kg for the contents).

The operating pressure of LPG cylinders is between 60psi to 80psi. However, its design pressure is 240 psi while its test pressure is 480psi. Its bursting pressure is 960 psi.

Household LPG appliances, such as stoves, ovens and driers generally operate at around 0.40psi. Low Pressure Regulators are therefore, needed to reduce tank pressure from 60psi to 0.40psi.

Petron Gasul maintains its LPG cylinders regularly to ensure that the products you receive are contained inside safe and reliable containers.
