LPG BASICS
LPG is the general term for Liquified Petroleum Gas. Petron Corporation, the largest LPG supplier in the country, sells it under the brand name GASUL.
LPG is a mixture of Propane, C3H8 (between 30% to 40%) and Butane, C4H10 (between 60% to 70%). It is heavier than air but lighter than water. When newly - filled, or when you buy it from your retailer, the LPG tank contains 80% liquid LPG and 20% gas. When used properly, LPG is one of the safest fuel for cooking, heating and other industrial uses.
LPG is colorless and odorless. However, an odorant (called ethyl mercaptan) is added to alert the user in case of leaks thus, helping prevent accidental fire.
LPG is sold either in Bulk (where it is metered) for large commercial applications or in Bottles or Cylinders (where it is weighed) for household and for small to medium commercial requirements. All Petron LPG cylinders have their Tare Weight painted on the cylinders to indicate the weight of the empty cylinders. For example, the Tare Weight painted on an 11kg Gasul tank is 13.10kg. The total weight of this tank, when newly – filled, should be 24.1kg (13.1kg for the weight of the empty cylinder plus 11kg for the contents).
The operating pressure of LPG cylinders is between 60psi to 80psi. However, its design pressure is 240 psi while its test pressure is 480psi. Its bursting pressure is 960 psi.
Household LPG appliances, such as stoves, ovens and driers generally operate at around 0.40psi. Low Pressure Regulators are therefore, needed to reduce tank pressure from 60psi to 0.40psi.
Petron Gasul maintains its LPG cylinders regularly to ensure that the products you receive are contained inside safe and reliable containers.
