A stroke, also known as a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted by a blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Without an adequate supply of oxygen and nutrients, brain cells begin to die within minutes, leading to sudden neurological symptoms such as weakness or numbness on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, vision problems, dizziness, loss of balance, or a severe headache. Stroke is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment to minimize brain damage and improve recovery. Early recognition of warning signs and rapid medical intervention can significantly reduce long-term disability and save lives.
