Gallery of Prints

Gallery of Prints Filipiniana. is a direct importer of such materials.

We are the first and only Gallery in the Philippines, specializing in Antique Prints and Books before 1900, with particular emphasis on the History of the Philippines, i.e. Since our establishment in 1996, or 16 years ago, we have grown and become internationally renowned as specialist of historical original printed material about the Philippines, dating back to the 16th Century. We are offering t

he Filipino connoisseur and collector of art and history of the Philippines and Southeast Asia an unsurpassed inventory of antique prints and maps covering six centuries, a volume and scope that compares favourably with any comparable Gallery in Hongkong or Singapore, and even Europe and the USA. Moreover, we published the first comprehensive compendium of antique prints on the Philippines with the book “The Philippines in the 19th Century” in 1998, along with postcards, reproductions, and other individual items intended to showcase the Philippines of the past to a broader audience. These local publications complement our huge range of antique maps, views, and prints on zoology, ornithology, ethnology, anthropology, geography, and other natural sciences. As is common with international galleries of this stature, we also offer ancillary services such as acid free, museum-style conservation matting and framing, as our Sister company Rudolf Lietz, Inc. In support of these activities, we sell these materials plus peripheral products in support of other galleries, contractors, interior decorator or individuals who execute such work on their own. Lastly, the location of the Gallery in a large Shopping Mall is conducive to attracting the occasional tourist or business visitor looking for the special corporate or individual gifts from a range of products not found elsewhere.

Hard to imagine the scale of the Manila Galleon that sailed between Manila and Acapulco from the 16th–19th centuries.
These ships were enormous for their time:

Length: about 40–60 meters (130–200 ft)
Height: up to 7 decks tall
Cargo capacity: 1,000–2,000 tons
Crew & passengers: often 300–500 people onboard

To put it into perspective: a single galleon could be as long as half a football field and tower several stories above the water. 🌊⛵

Check this out! The black faced spoonbill, scientific name Platalea minor, was spotted in Bulacan recently. Thanks to the dedicated birdwatchers of the Philippines .

I instantly clocked that bird and thought, “hey why have I seen that before!” Turns out we have a documented print, made in 1776, in the gallery!

Thank you to our lovely visitors who brought life back into our old books, and a sense of humor in the face of some really antique pieces of paper.

Personally, I noticed that people are often shy, or feel out of place when they enter places of academia. Or they believe that you have to be super academic or serious when broaching the topic of history from medieval to romanticism. That shouldn’t be the case, knowledge, or rather the pursuit of knowledge should be fun!

We should learn, and make jokes or have a sense of humor about it. Were people in the medieval era or renaissance so brusque and dry? No! They also had a sense of humor, check out the funny doodles in old illuminated manuscripts. After all, “The world is a tragedy to those who feel, but a comedy to those who think.” — Horace Walpole.

What is a print?
It is an image created through a process, carved, etched, drawn, or pressed from a matrix onto paper.
From woodcuts and engravings to lithography and screen printing, each technique leaves its own trace, texture, and history.
