As much as we try to avoid AI-generated design pegs, we have to admit that they’re one of the easiest ways to communicate a vision.

So instead of avoiding them altogether, we set realistic expectations. Before accepting an order, we explain what can realistically be achieved in cake form and send photos of our own work or similar designs we’ve successfully made. Once we’re both on the same page, that’s when we proceed with the order.

One rule I always follow is this:

If I can imagine how to make it, I can accept it. If I can’t imagine how to make it, I won’t.

That doesn’t mean we never try new techniques. We do. Every cake artist has a “first time” making something. But after years in this business, I’ve learned that it’s better to lose a sale than lose sleep over an order I’m not confident I can execute.

Another principle we stand by is this:

We don’t undercharge just because we’re unsure we can pull it off.

Our clients shouldn’t have to pay for our practice. If we’re not confident we can execute a design well, we’ll respectfully pass on it or suggest an alternative that we know we can deliver beautifully.

At the end of the day, charging less isn’t a valid reason to risk someone’s celebration.
