One of the last drawers of the paper session, and we saved the best for it.

This is a bound 1909 volume pairing Buhay at Mga Ginawa ni Dr. Josรฉ Rizal with the Tagalog Noli Me Tangere โ€” translated by Pascual H. Poblete and published by Rizalโ€™s own eldest sister, Saturnina โ€œNenengโ€ Rizal. The first โ€” serialized in 16-page weekly installments before this book collected it โ€” was the edition that put the novel in front of readers who couldnโ€™t read it in Spanish.

A comparable copy was for sale in 2014, estimated at โ‚ฑ80,000โ€“90,000. Another surfaced privately last year at โ‚ฑ120,000.

This one starts at โ‚ฑ15,000.

Fourth drawer, and this one isnโ€™t a book at all. ๐Ÿ“ท

Forty original photographs of the San Ramon Penal Farm in Zamboanga, consigned from the estate of Warden M. Garcia โ€” the prison itself, its grounds, its staff, its events. San Ramon was founded by royal decree in 1870 under Governor-General Ramon Blanco, making it the oldest penal institution in the country. It was emptied and burned during the 1898 Spanish-American War, then rebuilt under the American administration in 1907.

Institutional photo sets like this almost never survive intact โ€” they get broken up and sold print by print long before they reach an auction floor. Forty of them, from a wardenโ€™s own hand, is the kind of thing you donโ€™t see twice.

Starting bid: โ‚ฑ10,000.

Some things get passed down. Some things get found. This weekend, we're making room for both.

THE CORDILLERA, BEFORE IT CHANGED

It's 3pm. This morning, we opened the drawer containing the 40 photographs from San Ramon Penal Farm โ€” the country's oldest penal colony, captured on film. Now we're opening another drawer.

This time, it's eight photographs. One name. Full stop. This might be the best thing in either drawer.

Eduardo Masferrรฉ is the reason Philippine documentary photography exists as a category at all. Sagada-born, Catalan on his father's side, he was self-taught, using a large-format camera and no electricity to process the film โ€” from 1934 into the 1980s, he photographed Cordillera life before the modern world reached it: rice terraces, rituals, portraits, and the daily work of village life. His prints now sit in the Smithsonian and the National Gallery of Australia, which built an entire acquisition around his vintage work.

This set of eight was bought directly from Masferrรฉ himself at his studio in Bontoc in 1989 โ€” the same year he became the first Filipino photographer ever exhibited at Arles. Studio-stamped, straight from the source. Fellow collectors know how rare that combination is.

Starting bid: โ‚ฑ4,500. For eight. That's not a typo. That's just what happens when a lifetime's work still hasn't caught up to its worth.

The cabinet's open. Come see what's inside.

Okay, fellow drawer-openers โ€” today's the day. That video isn't just a nice shot of an old aparador catching the light (though it's gorgeous). It's an invitation. Starting today, we're pulling back the curtain on what's actually going up for auction on September 26 and 27 โ€” and trust us, it's the good stuff. The kind of pieces that either were handed down from someone's Lolo and Lola or were hunted down over years by a dealer who knew exactly what they were looking for. Coins, books, medals, ephemera, anting-anting, antiques โ€” the whole cabinet, laid out for everyone to see.

And here's the part that makes this more than a really nice shopping trip: every peso raised at the September 26th auction goes to the Ortigas Foundation Library โ€” the institution that's spent years as the collecting community's research partner, record-keeper, and reality check (they're the ones who can actually tell you if that "antique" is, in fact, just old). Libraries like that don't survive on good vibes alone. They survive because people like us show up.

So: browse today, start dreaming about Sept 26โ€“27, and if a lot catches your eye, don't just admire it on your feed โ€” the lots are already listed and open for pre-bidding in the Moreton Auctions app. Get in early, bid often, and let's fill that library's future the way our lolas filled that cabinet.
