Music, art and revolution

During the Spanish colonial era, many Kundiman songs carried secret revolutionary messages hidden behind poetic love lyrics. While these songs appeared to express romantic devotion, they often symbolized love for the motherland and the longing for freedom from colonial rule.

Filipino revolutionaries used Kundiman to ignite nationalism, subtly encouraging Filipinos to rise against oppression.

These melodies became a powerful tool of resistance, blending art and patriotism in a way that colonizers failed to recognize.
