🚨AUTISM EMERGENCY KIT: BE PREPARED BEFORE THE EMERGENCY HITS πŸ’™

If your autistic child gets overwhelmed, lost, injured or separated from their caregiver, having the right things ready can make a difficult situation safer and calmer.

πŸŽ’ What goes into an Autism Emergency Kit?

πŸ—£οΈ Communication Cards – Help your child communicate needs, feelings, choices or when they are uncomfortable.

πŸ’Š Medical Info – Include diagnosis, allergies, medications, emergency instructions, and important medical details.

🎧 Noise-Canceling Headphones – Drown out overwhelming noise in crowded or noisy environments.

🧸 Favorite Comfort Item - A familiar toy, blanket or sensory item can offer comfort and security.

βš•οΈ Medicines – Pack any medications you need, with clear instructions on how to take them.

🍎 Comfort Food – Being hungry can be stressful. Pack safe and favorite food.

πŸ’§ Water – In long emergencies or evacuations, keep your child hydrated.

πŸͺͺ Identification – Think about an ID card or bracelet with your child’s name, caregiver contact information and important details.

πŸ“ž Emergency Contacts - Have reliable contacts saved and ensure that more than one person knows how to get in touch with you.

πŸ’™ DON’T WAIT FOR AN EMERGENCY

No two autistic people are alike. Adapt kit to their communication style, sensory needs, comfort items, medications and safety risks.

A few minutes of prep today can make a huge difference when seconds count.

Swimming Tips for Kids πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈπŸ’™

Swimming is more than exercise. It builds confidence, coordination, independence, and water-safety skills.

Before swimming:
πŸ’§ Hydrate
πŸ₯— Eat normally
🚽 Use the toilet
β˜€οΈ Apply sunscreen outdoors

During swimming:
🚿 Shower first
πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ Start slowly
πŸ’¦ Take breaks when needed
πŸ‘‚ Watch for signs of discomfort

After swimming:
πŸ‘• Change into dry clothes
πŸ’§ Drink water
🍌 Have a small snack
🏠 Rest and relax

For children with autism or sensory needs, keep the routine simple and predictable.

No pressure. No rushing.

Let them learn at their own pace and celebrate every little step. πŸ’™

And remember: sometimes the biggest achievement isn’t swimming yet. It’s simply learning to feel safe in the water. πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈβœ¨

🚨 "YOUR CHILD IS CRYING IN THE MALL. PEOPLE ARE STARING. WHAT DO YOU DO?"

**First: DON'T PANIC. Don't punish. Don't be embarrassed.** πŸ’™

Your autistic child may not be β€œmisbehaving.”

**They may simply be overwhelmed.**

Too loud. πŸ”Š
Too bright. πŸ’‘
Too crowded. πŸ‘₯
Too much happening at once.

When their world becomes **TOO MUCH**, try this:

🌿 **1. GET OUT OF THE CROWD**
Find a quiet, less stimulating place.

🀫 **2. USE FEWER WORDS**
Say: *β€œYou're safe. I'm here.”*

⏳ **3. GIVE THEM TIME**
Don't rush them to calm down. Let their nervous system recover.

🎧 **4. OFFER THEIR COMFORT TOOLS**
Headphones, a favorite toy, fidget, or other sensory support.

🚫 **5. DON'T FORCE TALKING**
They may not be able to explain what they need right now.

πŸšͺ **6. LEAVE IF YOU NEED TO**
You don't have to finish shopping or stay at the event.

πŸ‘€ **7. FORGET THE STARES**
Strangers don't need to understand. **Your child needs you.**

# # # πŸ’™ CALM FIRST. TALK LATER.

A meltdown isn't your child being β€œbad.”

Sometimes it means:

**β€œMom/Dad, this is too much. I need help.”**

And that's when they need **connection, not correction.** 🫢

πŸ“Œ **SAVE THIS POST for the next time you’re out with your child.**

Share it, too. **One informed parent can make a very difficult moment feel safer.** πŸ’™

πŸ—£οΈ **SPEECH TIPS FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN πŸ’™**

Every child communicates differently. Some children speak early, some speak later, some use only a few words, and some communicate through gestures, pictures, signs, or AAC. **All forms of communication matter.** πŸ’™

Here are simple ways parents and caregivers can support communication at home:

✨ **1. Talk about what your child is interested in.**
If your child loves cars, talk about β€œcar,” β€œgo,” β€œred car,” or β€œfast car.” Follow their interests instead of constantly changing the topic.

✨ **2. Use short, simple language.**
Instead of β€œDo you want to drink some water?” try **β€œWater?”** or **β€œWant water?”** Simple language is easier to process and imitate.

✨ **3. Give your child time to respond.**
Ask a question, then WAIT. Give them several seconds to process and respond. Don't immediately answer for them.

✨ **4. Expand what they say.**
If your child says **β€œball,”** you can say **β€œbig ball!”** or **β€œthrow ball!”** You're modeling the next step without demanding repetition.

✨ **5. Model instead of forcing.**
Avoid repeatedly saying, β€œSay it.” Instead, naturally model the word or phrase during play and daily routines.

✨ **6. Use gestures, pictures, signs, or AAC.**
AAC does **not** prevent speech. Giving a child another way to communicate can reduce frustration and increase opportunities to communicate.

✨ **7. Celebrate communicationβ€”not just words.**
A point, gesture, eye gaze, sign, picture, sound, word, or AAC message can all be meaningful communication.

✨ **8. Make communication fun!** 🎈
Play, sing, read books, imitate sounds, take turns, and follow your child's lead. Connection creates opportunities for communication.

πŸ’™ **Remember:** The goal isn't simply to make a child talk. The goal is to help them **communicate, understand, connect, and be understood.**

If you're concerned about your child's communication development, consider consulting a **speech-language pathologist (SLP)** for individualized assessment and support.

πŸ“Œ **Save this post for your next play session and share it with another parent who may need it.**
