Finally, I got hold of one of my designer friends who is based in Karachi, Pakistan. Are you excited to have a tour in his beautiful home?
Meet Majyd Inam, a graphic designer and a part-time vibe curator from Karachi, Pakistan. Aside from doing design projects in front of his computer, he enjoys sipping chai tea and loves rearranging his plants, which for him, are part of his emotional support jungle.
Despite his busy schedule, I had the privilege to ask him a few questions, from which, I believe, all of us would really learn from his design perspective and ideas.
He shared that our home is not just a physical place to live in. It involves our entire emotions and feelings while we live in it. It should make us feel relaxed, happy, and motivated. That is why it's clear to see that his well-curated home really resonates vibrant but cozy colors and a unique, cheery character.
Majyd is deeply inspired by movie sets. From just watching movies, he remembers and takes important notes on how cozy those appearances of shelves filled with books, stunning warm lights, and soft couches are. For him, it always looks like everything there is perfect and dreamy. And so he thought, why should that only exist in the movies when he can also recreate it in real life?
This Karachi-based designer also draws his inspiration from his childhood dreams and his fascination with cartoons and animations. He said, ''I’ve always loved how cartoons showcased cozy bedrooms. A bed near the window, sunbeams pouring in, birds chirping, and comfy cushions everywhere. That dreamy animation vibe. I wanted that in real life.''
He narrated that muted colors don't work for him. He wanted everything to look lively. Well, his apartment truly speaks to how vibrant colors dominate his space as if happiness is just glowing from all the walls and corners.
In this interview, he also shared some practical decorating tips that many of us would really benefit from.
He greatly put an emphasis on the use of lighting. He expressed, ''Please throw away those white lights. Our home is not a hospital. Use warm bulbs, lamps, fairy lights, hanging lights, floor lamps... Just light the space like it’s a dream. The more layers of lights, the better. This sets the mood and gives you a sense of safety.''
Aside from that, he reminds us that other elements are also important to make our room look and feel more cozy. Placing plants in the dull corners of our home would make a huge difference. They bring life and calmness as if our room would breathe with us. He encourages to throw on some carpets and rugs, as they soften both the noise and the cold feeling of empty floors. Light some candles, incense, and all the essential oils, as their aromas could envelop our space, making it feel warmer and more inviting. And of course, he reminds us not to forget to let the sunshine in. Open the curtain and let the sunlight just walk in like it owns our place. It surely would fill our room with its golden glow and warmth.
Truly, as what Majyd pointed out, to make our space cozy, relaxing, and homey, everything should be intentional. Intelligently use colors that make us smile. Use textures that make us comfortable. Use light that gives us a warm hug. As he said, creating coziness doesn’t have to be expensive. It's just as simple as making short, whimsical moments a part of our homes and our lives.
