When it comes to making a bold statement, not much can beat an indoor tree. While we’ll always love our small houseplants, mini herb gardens, and adorably tiny succulents, there’s something so unique and out of the ordinary about having a tree under your roof. Plants are figuratively and literally the breath of fresh air we need in our homes after a long day, and they happen to look really chic while doing it.

Whether it’s in the form of painted terracotta planters or a trendy vertical garden, adding houseplants to your apartment or home has its benefits, too. Not only do they look amazing, but some can purify the air, others provide sustenance, and all infuse a space with nature—which is especially nice for city dwellers. Indoor trees can do the same, but on a much larger scale. The varieties of trees that can thrive inside are plentiful, and the billowy branches, bright fruits, and tall trunks basically act as statement pieces that fit into any type of space and work with any style preference.

So, if you’ve already got your indoor vines and flowering plants on lock, take a peek at the indoor trees we’ve rounded up below to add some larger-than-life pizzazz to your place.

Ma Yansong is a Chinese architect and founder of MAD architects. MAD Architects is an international architecture practice "committed to developing futuristic, organic and technologically advanced designs that embody a contemporary interpretation of the Eastern affinity with nature".

With its core design philosophy based on "Shanshui City", MAD endeavors to create “a balance between humanity, the city and the environment, in a vision of the city of the future based on the spiritual and emotional needs of its residents”.
The concept of "Shanshui City", by the renowned Chinese scientist Qian Xuesen (1911-2009), began in the Eighties. The aim, in theory, was to create cities and urban communities which would "allow people to stay out of nature and return to nature. However, the concept remained purely theoretical and was never implemented.

MAD Architects is recognized as one of the most exciting young Chinese design studios in the world. In 2008 ICON magazine included him in the current 20 most influential young architects.
MAD focuses on formal invention combined with manipulating high-performance materials, as illustrated in projects such as the China Wood Sculpture Museum (2013) and Ordos Museum (2011). Inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s Dome Over Manhattan, this is a disconcerting creation for the municipality of Ordos’ rigid masterplan for the new city center.

Reyes was dean of the then-College of Architecture and Fine Arts from 1991-2000, and it was during her third term in 1999 when UST’s Architecture program was hailed as a Center of Excellence by the Commission on Higher Education.

Reyes was the first female to hold top positions in two big organizations of architects. She became the 14th president of the United Architects of the Philippines in 1998, and was elected chairman of the Architects Regional Council of Asia.

Reyes said she is most proud of her architectural work in the Caleruega Retreat House in Batangas, which earned her the United Architects of the Philippines’ Design Award for Architecture in 1996 for “achieving a graceful blending the of natural and built environment,” according to the citation.

The history of architecture is about as long as the history of humanity itself, and probably just as complex. The exact origin of architecture could be said to date to the Neolithic period, around 10 000 BC, or simply when people stopped living in caves and started handling the way they want their houses to look and feel like. The architecture that we’re talking about today is commonly assessed through visual terms and subject to ocular perception, but this urge to design an architectural artifact was fueled by much more than the mere need for aesthetic appeal. Architecture has proven to be many things – comfy, elegant, modern, brutal, indexical, vernacular – and yet, one of its most interesting aspects is its capacity to reflect the spirit of time, in a way that might be even more substantial than how we see it happen with art. The parallelism of history od architecture to human history is justified by its strong material presence that serves as the best physical evidence of societal change. Just looking at the buildings made in different places at a different moment in time would help us understand the evolution of architecture and our past without using any words. Human actions were embodied in architecture, and further clarified through the persistent endeavor to protect some of the built heritage, and to decide to let the rest of it fade and decay.

Louis Isadore Kahn (February 20th 1901 – March 17th 1974) was one of the United States' greatest 20th century architects, known for combining Modernism with the weight and dignity of ancient monuments. Though he did not arrive at his distinctive style until his early 50s, and despite his death at the age of just 73, in a span of just two decades Kahn came to be considered by many as part of the pantheon of modernist architects which included Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe.

Sir Norman Foster is an award-winning and prolific British architect known for sleek, modern designs of steel and glass with innovations in contouring and inner space management. He was part of the architectural group Team 4 before branching off on his own to form what would eventually be known as Foster + Partners. Foster earned acclaim for his design of the Willis Faber & Dumas headquarters in the early '70s and was later responsible for the updated Reichstag in Berlin after the reunification of Germany as well as the Hearst Tower in New York City. His design practice has overseen an array of heralded structures around the globe.

“There's a snobbery at work in architecture. The subject is too often treated as a fine art, delicately wrapped in mumbo-jumbo. In reality, it's an all-embracing discipline taking in science, art, maths, engineering, climate, nature, politics, economics. Every time I've flown an aircraft, or visited a steelworks, or watched a panel-beater at work, I've learned something new that can be applied to buildings.”

—Norman Foster

The Perception of Color in Architecture

Color is an integral element of our world, not just in the natural environment but also in the man-made architectural environment. Color always played a role in the human evolutionary process. The environment and its colors are perceived, and the brain processes and judges what it perceives on an objective and subjective basis. Psychological influence, communication, information, and effects on the psyche are aspects of our perceptual judgment processes. Hence, the goals of color design in an architectural space are not relegated to decoration alone.
