Different Types Of Wicks

Hey Guys! I just want to share something interesting today!

Did you know that there are different types of wicks that are used in candle-making? Yes there are several. But I will share to you these three basic types for today.

The first type of wick used is the cotton wicks, or Eco-wicks. These are the ones that are typically used for natural waxes, particularly, in paraffin wax. These strings of wick are usually pre-waxed using vegetable wax to ensure clean and proper burning.

The second type is the wood wick. These are thin pieces of wood that is prepared to be used as the wick. Typically used in soy candle making, these wood wicks produce a distinct wood crackle sound when lit. It distributes the heat evenly, producing an even burning and a slow melting of the wax. Highly recommended for soy scented candles, like the ones we produce!

The third one, is the Zinc core wick. These are commonly used in paraffin and gel wax candles. It is actually pretty similar with the cotton wick, but with a stronger core of zinc. This ensures that the candle being poured, especially for upright candles. This however, is not recommended to be used for natural waxes.

Aside from the distinctive “Crackling” sound produced by wood wicks when lit, there are several distinctive features and benefits of using wood wicks over cotton wicks.

First of, woodwicks are environmentally friendly. Since they are made of natural materials, and is realatively easier to manufacture or fabricate, they need little energy to make.

Secondly, woodwicks are better at dissipating flame and heat. Since it has a bigger surface, the distribution of heat is wider, making for an even heating of the candle. Little to no soot as well. Also, woodwicks dissipate fragance better, since it heats up faster and wider than your ordinary cotton wicks.

Overall, they are not only visually and acoustically better for the ambiance, but also way better than your traditional cotton wicks.

Currently, the candle’s primary purpose is for aesthetics, ambiance, and scent.

With that in mind, it is not too far-fetched to think that this critical invention has had various iterations, some are quite extensively expensive as well. From the very cheap ones to the top luxury items, here are some of the most expensive candles ever:

1. Parrot’s Scented Treasure On The Prairie

Costing a whopping $900 price tag, this handmade candle from Spain has this glazed porcelain that has a parrot decorated vessel. The Scent of the Prairie would easily engulf your entire home once you light them.

It has four cotton wicks to ensure that the candle burns uniformly.

2. Fornasetti Candle Losanghe
Priced at $650 per piece, this is also one of the most expensive ones in the world. With a facial design on the vessel, you can never mistake this wonderful piece of art. The scent is of natural wax, with the hint of fragrance Otto, using Mediterranean herbs, wood, and, incense.

At $685, this candle is not cheap indeed! ADVANTAGE OF SOY WAX CANDLES

There are actually quite a lot of advantages of using soy wax candles than the traditional Paraffin wax candles!

1. Soy Wax is made from soy beans, a natural renewable source! Paraffin on the other hand, is made from petroleum, a processed refined gasoline product, definitely NOT environment-friendly!
2. Soy wax is biodegradable!
3. With soy wax having a lower melting point than paraffin wax, soy candles actually burn slower and LASTS LONGER!
4. Burning soy wax does not produce soot, you know, the black smoke that stains everywhere. Paraffin wax candles do.
