On the Spot Mural Painting Contest

PINTANGHALAN 2.0 is a live, on-the-spot mural painting contest that celebrates the culture and arts of Tayabas through the vibrant medium of murals. This event serves as a sequel to PINTANGHALAN 2024, which was held in May 2024.

This year’s mural contest revolves around the theme: "PDA-QPC: Pursuing Oral Health Awareness, One Smile at a Time."
The theme emphasizes the importance of oral health and the collective effort to raise awareness about it in the community. "PDA-QPC" refers to the Philippine Dental Association - Quezon Province Chapter, which is at the forefront of this initiative. The phrase "Pursuing Oral Health Awareness" highlights the ongoing mission to educate the public on the significance of proper oral hygiene and dental care.

The addition of "One Smile at a Time" conveys a personal, approachable approach to this campaign. It suggests that improving oral health can start with simple, individual actions, which collectively contribute to the overall health of the community. The mural contest encourages both creative expression and social responsibility by using art as a medium to promote better oral health practices, one smile at a time.

The event is organized by the City Health Office - Dental Section, in collaboration with the Philippine Dental Association - Quezon Province Chapter, the Department of Health, the National Association of Dentists, and the Skilled, Innovative, and Creative Artists of the Philippines, Inc. (SICAP).

All Aboard the Jeepney

Jeepney is one of the most commonly used form of transportation here the country. Started back after World War II. These vehicles carried out history and culture of the Philippines. Being the center topic of different researches and artworks. Just like the painting that was painted by a talented young artist from Tayabas.
Looking at the painting the most noticeable elements used were lines and colors. The artist used bright colors to attract audience. The hues of the painting used a bright and dark colors, bright colors for the jeepney and the clothes of the characters, dark colors for the faces and to also highlights the shapes of the elements. Vibrant and bright colors were used to emphasize the jeepney from the bottom to the top, from the vehicle’s bumper to the passenger’s door. On the other hand, the artist used dull or dark colors for the background to avoid clashing colors with the jeepney which is the subject. In terms of line, the artist uses different types of lines to create an image. This type of painting used acrylic paint as one of its medium. Pencil use to make outlines and canvas is the material used to place the painting or the artwork.
When it comes to the painting’s message, besides that it commemorates the traditional transportation in the Philippines. It also points out the discrimination in terms of colorism. In the painting some diverse people showed stereotyping. Because most of the dark-skin colored people or Indigenous people are least to be respected. Those who are dark-skin colored people sat on the top load or on the roof of the jeepney while other people are sitting inside the jeepney thinking they were special that there are some kind of special treatment. Even though there is some kind of stereotyping when it comes to where people sit. They still believed that no one will be left behind.
It also depicts the everyday life situation in a jeepney. It shows the lack in space. It can be seen through the woman who still wants to get on board. Just like in real life, jeepneys are oftentimes full when it leaves its terminal. It also shows that Filipino’s morals and values are slowly fading. Back then Filipino were very generous and gentleman specially to woman and old people. But not a very few people only practice these traits.
One of the reasons why did the artist paint this master piece was maybe because of the issue that the jeepneys were going to be phased-out. Due to the fact that transportation materials are evolving, many cars and vehicles were created. Or maybe it depicts people’s struggles in life. People on the roof representing the problems that people carry through their lives. But as the time goes by, the passengers were slowly getting off. Just like in life, by the time pass by people’s problems slowly go away.
With all the things that were noticed by the audience the most prominent thing that can be seen is how the artist used jeepney as its subject. Depicting different perspective for the audience to see. Different point of view to look at.

Visual Analysis #8
by Albuen, Lycha Mae O.

Basilica Minor de Archangel

STEP 1: GENERAL INFORMATION

Subject: Basilica Minor de Archangel Church
Artist: Mary Arianne Zubieta
Date: No date is specified in the artwork
Provenance: City of Tayabas
Location: Casa Comunidad (City of Tayabas)
Medium: Acrylic on Paper

STEP 2:

Character or Figure: The church captured as a dark silhouette against multi-colored sky.

Mood: The mood of the painting is serene and reflective, evoking a sense of calmness through the quiet church silhouette and the warm, fading light of the sunset.

Theme: The theme likely revolves around spirituality, faith, or historical architecture. The emphasis on the silhouette of the basilica against a vast sky highlights the transcendence and timelessness of religious structures. I believe that the artist of this painting wanted to emphasize the beauty of our historical church, I think that she wants people to appreciate the calmness it evokes. I also think that the artist is a devotee who has a strong faith in god and that she finds peace whenever she is at the church. The sunset in the painting evoke the feeling of peace, calm but can also evoke a sense of loss and nostalgia.

STEP 3:

ELEMENTS OF ART

LINE: The lines in the painting are primarily used to outline the church's silhouette, creating sharp contrasts with the sky. The edges of the building are smooth and distinct, emphasizing its structure.

Shape: The church is depicted in simple, bold, organic shapes, forming a recognizable outline without much detail. The windows and arches of the basilica are shown as curved negative spaces against the dark form.

Form: The building is rendered as a flat silhouette, so there is no significant exploration of depth or three-dimensional in the structure. The flat form contrasts with the dynamic sky.

Space: There are two kinds of space in the painting: the positive (subject) and the negative space (background). The positive space in this painting is the church because it is the focus of the painting. While the negative space is the background which is the multi colored sky called as the sunset.

Value: The painting uses contrasts in value—the dark silhouette against the lighter, more varied colors of the sky. The value of the sky gradually changes from dark purple and blue at the top to warm orange and yellow near the horizon.

Texture: The texture is smooth and uniform due to the acrylic medium on paper. The artist focuses more on flat areas of color than on intricate details, creating a clean, almost graphic quality.

Color: Color plays a critical role, particularly in the sky. The warm tones of orange, yellow, and red mix with cooler blues and purples, suggesting the end of the day. The colors add emotional depth to the piece and set a peaceful, contemplative tone.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN

Balance: The composition is asymmetrical but balanced. The dark mass of the church on the right side contrasts with the vast, open sky on the left, creating a stability between solid form and open space.

Emphasis: The emphasis is on the silhouette of the basilica, which is placed prominently in the foreground. The contrasting dark shape draws the viewer's attention immediately.

Movement: The movement is subtle and comes from the sky's gradients and color transitions. The eye naturally follows the shifts in color from the top of the painting to the bottom, mimicking the natural movement of the setting sun.

Rhythm: The repeating elements of the church's arched windows create a rhythmic pattern. Additionally, the progression of colors in the sky provides a visual rhythm, moving the viewer’s eye through the composition.

Proportion: The church dominates the lower portion of the composition, while the sky occupies the upper part. The proportions between the structure and the sky suggest the majestic beauty and importance of the church in relation to the vast, infinite sky.

Variety: I think that there is no variety in this painting, because the subject is well in place and there is no other element in this painting besides the church which is the subject.

Unity: The elements of the church and sky work harmoniously together. The consistent style, with simple, bold shapes and smooth gradients, creates a sense of unity throughout the piece.

PROCESS OF ART

The artist seems to paint the silhouette of the church first using acrylic to fill in the flat, dark form. While the sky was probably built up in layers, transitioning smoothly from one color to another to achieve the ethereal beauty of the sunset that adds up to the mood of the painting. The focus on its subject and the choice of colors in the background allows the viewer to engage emotionally with the colors and the simple yet powerful contrast. The overall process appears to focus more on capturing the essence of the subject or the place rather than its detail.
