Basilica Minor de Archangel
STEP 1: GENERAL INFORMATION
Subject: Basilica Minor de Archangel Church
Artist: Mary Arianne Zubieta
Date: No date is specified in the artwork
Provenance: City of Tayabas
Location: Casa Comunidad (City of Tayabas)
Medium: Acrylic on Paper
STEP 2:
Character or Figure: The church captured as a dark silhouette against multi-colored sky.
Mood: The mood of the painting is serene and reflective, evoking a sense of calmness through the quiet church silhouette and the warm, fading light of the sunset.
Theme: The theme likely revolves around spirituality, faith, or historical architecture. The emphasis on the silhouette of the basilica against a vast sky highlights the transcendence and timelessness of religious structures. I believe that the artist of this painting wanted to emphasize the beauty of our historical church, I think that she wants people to appreciate the calmness it evokes. I also think that the artist is a devotee who has a strong faith in god and that she finds peace whenever she is at the church. The sunset in the painting evoke the feeling of peace, calm but can also evoke a sense of loss and nostalgia.
STEP 3:
ELEMENTS OF ART
LINE: The lines in the painting are primarily used to outline the church's silhouette, creating sharp contrasts with the sky. The edges of the building are smooth and distinct, emphasizing its structure.
Shape: The church is depicted in simple, bold, organic shapes, forming a recognizable outline without much detail. The windows and arches of the basilica are shown as curved negative spaces against the dark form.
Form: The building is rendered as a flat silhouette, so there is no significant exploration of depth or three-dimensional in the structure. The flat form contrasts with the dynamic sky.
Space: There are two kinds of space in the painting: the positive (subject) and the negative space (background). The positive space in this painting is the church because it is the focus of the painting. While the negative space is the background which is the multi colored sky called as the sunset.
Value: The painting uses contrasts in value—the dark silhouette against the lighter, more varied colors of the sky. The value of the sky gradually changes from dark purple and blue at the top to warm orange and yellow near the horizon.
Texture: The texture is smooth and uniform due to the acrylic medium on paper. The artist focuses more on flat areas of color than on intricate details, creating a clean, almost graphic quality.
Color: Color plays a critical role, particularly in the sky. The warm tones of orange, yellow, and red mix with cooler blues and purples, suggesting the end of the day. The colors add emotional depth to the piece and set a peaceful, contemplative tone.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Balance: The composition is asymmetrical but balanced. The dark mass of the church on the right side contrasts with the vast, open sky on the left, creating a stability between solid form and open space.
Emphasis: The emphasis is on the silhouette of the basilica, which is placed prominently in the foreground. The contrasting dark shape draws the viewer's attention immediately.
Movement: The movement is subtle and comes from the sky's gradients and color transitions. The eye naturally follows the shifts in color from the top of the painting to the bottom, mimicking the natural movement of the setting sun.
Rhythm: The repeating elements of the church's arched windows create a rhythmic pattern. Additionally, the progression of colors in the sky provides a visual rhythm, moving the viewer’s eye through the composition.
Proportion: The church dominates the lower portion of the composition, while the sky occupies the upper part. The proportions between the structure and the sky suggest the majestic beauty and importance of the church in relation to the vast, infinite sky.
Variety: I think that there is no variety in this painting, because the subject is well in place and there is no other element in this painting besides the church which is the subject.
Unity: The elements of the church and sky work harmoniously together. The consistent style, with simple, bold shapes and smooth gradients, creates a sense of unity throughout the piece.
PROCESS OF ART
The artist seems to paint the silhouette of the church first using acrylic to fill in the flat, dark form. While the sky was probably built up in layers, transitioning smoothly from one color to another to achieve the ethereal beauty of the sunset that adds up to the mood of the painting. The focus on its subject and the choice of colors in the background allows the viewer to engage emotionally with the colors and the simple yet powerful contrast. The overall process appears to focus more on capturing the essence of the subject or the place rather than its detail.
