Looking forward to working together to promote a sustainable design and construction agenda.

The architecture and design profession is at a critical juncture. Climate change poses escalating risks to the built environment and the people who live in it, prompting the need for immediate, proactive, industry-wide action.

Integrating climate science into building science demands a significant shift in design thinking, particularly from architects as project leaders. Architects bear the important responsibility as licensed design professionals to protect the public’s health, safety, and welfare. If architects aren’t considering future climate conditions when designing structures and communities, then who will?

On December 29, 2025, a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Institute of Architects Pakistan (IAP) and Dawn News at the Dawn News office in Karachi.

The agreement designates the Institute of Architects Pakistan as the Official Knowledge Partner for the upcoming "BuildFest International" event, scheduled for January 2026. The MoU was formally signed by the President of IAP, Ar. Fawad Suhail Abbasi, who was joined at the ceremony by the Chairman of the IAP Karachi Chapter, Ar. Sohail Ahmed Chohan, and the National Coordinator for this initiative, Ar. Arif Belgaumi.

This partnership establishes a formal exchange of expertise and visibility. In recognition of the collaboration, Dawn News will provide IAP with extensive visibility across its media platforms, which include television, radio, print, digital platforms, and on-ground event branding. In return, IAP will lend its professional authority by providing expert speakers for sessions, offering strategic industry insights, and sharing valuable intellectual capital such as award-winning project portfolios and policy summaries. Additionally, IAP will actively promote the event through its own digital and membership channels.

This collaboration represents a significant effort to enhance architectural discourse in the public sphere, positioning IAP’s expertise at the forefront of a major industry event and fostering greater public engagement in the fields of architecture and sustainable urban development.

Last weekend The Institute of Architects Pakistan - Karachi Chapter successfully hosted the 21st iteration of IAPEX in Karachi, the nation's premiere exhibition of architectural ideas and building materials. I had the honour of moderating the concluding panel discussion titled "Urban Realities: The Built Environment of Karachi Today", an attempt to explore the state of planning and governance in Karachi and the prospects for its future. We had a super panel consisting of Architect and Planner, Prof. Dr. Noman Ahmed, Urban Planner Farhan Anwar, Architect and Planner Fazal Noor, Ar. Khwaja Badiuzzaman and Ar. Husnain Lotia.

Karachi faces numerous structural and systemic problems aggravated by the provincial government's longstanding inability to exercise any political will. The challenges facing the city are no secret but time and again the initiatives to address these issues have been thwarted by personal gain or disruptive political agendas. One of the largest and one of the fastest growing cities in the world, representing 10% of the national population, a true cosmopolitan microcosm of the diversity of Pakistan, the largest generator of tax revenue and custom duty in the country, the veritable economic engine of Pakistan struggles to provide for the needs of its citizens. Numerous federal agencies vie for municipal control over large parts of the urban centre. The city is starved for resources; barely half of its water needs are met. No master plan has ever been made law. The public transport network barely provides 10% of the needs of the metropolis. An assortment of ill-considered bylaws frustrate any attempt to direct the development of the city in any rational and meaningful way. What is the possibility that after 77 years of mismanagement, greed and corruption the next 23 years will realize the vision of the Karachi Master Plan 2047.

Considering the complexity of the challenges facing Karachi, the panel barely scratched the surface of the topic, but it was a positive start to an extremely timely and pertinent dialogue, one that must be continued for the sake of our city.

Our cities are becoming unlivable. Karachi is perhaps the best example of this. Decades of administrative negligence and real estate greed have brought us to a state of extreme urban squalor. Poor architectural design and thoughtless construction practices have produced buildings that are mean-spirited and lack comfort. The spectre of global warming and climate change only makes these conditions worse. It is imperative for us to adopt strategies to address global warming and immensely important that these strategies be understood in simple everyday language. A few days ago, I had the opportunity on Geo News Urdu, to discuss the heat waves that are becoming increasingly common, and how to we can build better; better homes, better buildings and better cities. We barely scratched the surface but it's a start.
