Today Earth Day is commemorated around the world! We are proud to celebrate the first month of the “Designing Sustainable Futures” exhibition, curated by designer Ana Mestre, celebrating 25 years of sustainable design practice.

“Designing Sustainable Futures” showcases an overview of SUSDESIGN Studio´s portfolio, including the outstanding circular economy diplomatic furniture designed for the 2021 Portuguese Presidency of the Council of the European Union, iconic pieces from the pioneering CORQUE design furniture collection, and a curation of inspiring DESIGN FUTURES projects focusing on the Circular Economy, Biomaterials, Regenerative Cities, Social Innovation and Digital Dematerialization.

Do not miss this exhibition, open until the 31st of July 2026, at the Exhibition Center of the outstanding “Pavilhão de Portugal” / Parque das Nações.

The Design Futures exhibition curated by design director Ana Mestre is a manifesto with an idea of designing for sustainability, and ultimately creating a space of thinking and development, reflecting the work developed by Lisbon-based SUSDESIGN – Design for Sustainability Studio & Research, and integrating the vision of CIEBA's new Future Worlds Lab at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon.

As we near the end of 2024, we are proud to look back at the DESIGN FUTURES exhibition held last month at Galeria Belas Artes in Lisbon, curated by designer, researcher and professor Ana Mestre.

The question, “How does the future of design look like?” inspired the narrative of the exhibition curation, which challenged the way we think about design and its potential to shape the solutions of a more sustainable future.

Throughout the gallery, DESIGN FUTURES showcased a wide range of projects, from climate-focused and social innovation design to neuroscience based design and digital manufacturing — an overview of design possibilities inspiring a more sustainable and equitable world.
Sparking creativity and inspiring reflection, the exhibition presents a dialogue between the public and different generations of designers. More than just objects on display, the selected projects highlighted the broader understanding of the design discipline as a whole — as research, process, and result.
