At MAAT, we designed a wayfinding system to make the visitor experience simpler and more intuitive.
By observing how visitors move through the campus, we developed a cohesive visual language that brings together totems, signage, maps, and supporting elements, guiding visitors from arrival through to the end of their visit.
A system that connects the entire campus and enhances the visitor experience.

Most people remember this moth because of Cristiano Ronaldo. But it deserves to be known for another reason.

Autographa gamma is one of the most common species found in urban ecosystems and an essential part of the urban food web, feeding bats, lizards and other animals. Its presence helps maintain the balance of an ecosystem that exists right in the heart of our cities.

In Natural Variations, at MUHNAC, we explore this urban ecosystem through the relationships between species. Because biodiversity is not just about identifying animals and plants, but about understanding how each one contributes to the functioning of the whole.

Does science always have to be communicated in the same way?

When we started exploring ways to talk about the energy transition with AQUILA, we realised something: explaining a topic is not always enough to engage people.

So, we decided to try a different approach: a comic book.

That’s how Stories with Energy – A Mystery Around the Sun came to life. It tells the story of a family that leaves the city for the countryside and finds itself facing real questions about energy, land use, and the impact we have on the spaces around us.

The goal was never to simplify the topic, but to bring it closer to people and create a more accessible way to explore, discuss, and question it.

And that’s how this comic took shape.

Because, in the end, stories remain one of the best ways to talk about complex issues. And because there are still plenty of people who love reading comics.

A ciência tem mesmo de ser comunicada sempre da mesma maneira?
Quando começámos a explorar formas de falar sobre transição energética com a AQUILA, percebemos uma coisa: explicar nem sempre chega para envolver pessoas.
Por isso, experimentámos outro caminho: Banda Desenhada.
Assim nasceu “Histórias com Energia - Um mistério à volta do Sol”, uma narrativa sobre uma família que troca a cidade pelo campo e se confronta com questões reais sobre energia, território e impacto no espaço à sua volta.
A ideia não era simplif**ar o tema, mas aproximá-lo das pessoas e criar uma forma mais acessível de o acompanhar, discutir e questionar.
Foi assim que esta BD ganhou forma.
Porque, no fundo, as histórias continuam a ser uma das melhores maneiras de falar sobre temas complexos. E porque ainda há muita gente que gosta de ler histórias aos quadradinhos.

Biological Park of Vinhais 🐺Wolf life

There is much more to discover about wolves than the stories have led us to believe.

With this exhibition, we wanted to move away from the idea of the “big bad wolf” and bring people closer to the real wolf: a complex animal, essential to ecosystem balance, whose relationship with humans continues to raise important questions.

At the invitation of the Municipality of Vinhais, TOYNO developed an exhibition for the Biological Park of Vinhais, shaped through research, collaboration with experts, and observation in the field.

Throughout the exhibition, science, behaviour, and conservation come together to challenge myths and help visitors better understand the impact of our actions.

Ultimately, it is an invitation to look at wolves differently and to recognise that their protection also depends on how we choose to coexist with nature.

Há muito mais para descobrir sobre o lobo do que aquilo que nos contaram nas histórias.

Com esta exposição, quisemos afastar-nos da ideia do “lobo mau” e aproximar as pessoas do lobo real: um animal complexo, essencial ao equilíbrio do ecossistema e cuja relação com o Homem continua a levantar questões importantes.

A convite da Câmara Municipal de Vinhais, a TOYNO desenvolveu um percurso expositivo para o Parque Biológico de Vinhais, construído a partir de investigação, contacto com especialistas e observação no território.

Ao longo da exposição cruzam-se ciência, comportamento e conservação, ajudando a desmontar mitos e a perceber melhor o impacto das nossas ações.

No fundo, é um convite a olhar para o lobo de outra forma, e a perceber que a sua proteção também depende da forma como escolhemos coexistir com a natureza.

There is much more to discover about wolves than the stories have led us to believe.

How do you explain how olive oil is made without turning it into a lecture?
At Lagar do Marmelo, by Sovena, the goal wasn’t to showcase machinery. It was about bringing people closer and making Oliveira da Serra and Andorinha feel like more than just names on a label.
Instead of explaining everything, we started by exploring the journey. Where do people stop? What sparks curiosity? What makes someone want to taste, compare, choose?
We tested different moments throughout the visit. Small interactions, simple decisions.
Our proposal was for people to take part, experiment with combinations and, in the end, leave with a story - and a blend - that is their own.

Como é que se explica como se produz azeite sem dar uma aula?
No Lagar do Marmelo, da Sovena, a questão não era mostrar máquinas. Era aproximar as pessoas e fazer com que Oliveira da Serra e Andorinha deixassem de ser só nomes no rótulo.
Em vez de explicar tudo, começámos por explorar o percurso. Onde é que as pessoas param? O que desperta curiosidade? O que faz alguém querer provar, comparar, escolher?
Fomos testando momentos ao longo da visita. Pequenas interações, decisões simples.
A nossa proposta foi que as pessoas participassem, arriscassem combinações e, no final, levassem uma história - e um blend - que é delas.

Science changes the world.
But only when it is understood.
At TOYNO, we believe that communication means building bridges between knowledge and people, between data and decisions. Over the past year, we worked with Aquila, a renewable energy company, to help make the importance of the energy transition clearer to local communities.
Before designing, we listened.
Before communicating, we studied.
We examined both the benefits and the challenges of renewable energy in comparison with fossil fuels.
The travelling exhibition “Around Energy,” now on display at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, is one of the projects that emerged from this collaboration.
The energy transition raises many questions.
We believe that communicating science means turning questions into awareness and awareness into the future.

A ciência muda o mundo.
Mas só quando é compreendida.
Na TOYNO acreditamos que comunicar é criar pontes, entre conhecimento e pessoas, entre dados e decisões.
No último ano trabalhámos com a Aquila, empresa de energias renováveis, para ajudar a tornar mais clara a importância da transição energética junto das populações.

A exposição itinerante “À Volta da Energia”, agora patente na Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa, é um dos projetos que resultou deste trabalho conjunto
A transição energética levanta muitas dúvidas.
Acreditamos que comunicar ciência é transformar dúvidas em consciência , e consciência em futuro.

ISEG, Lisbon School of Economics & Management, is located in the centre of Lisbon. Great.
But for those who experience it every day, the campus works as a set of separate levels connected by many stairs.
TOYNO spent months going up and down this route to understand that the topography creates real “territories”.
The solution was not to eliminate this condition, but to work with it: if there are distinct parts, each one should have a clear function and be worth the walk.
The first intervention is in the library, the only building that connects the two levels.
Instead of being just a place for books, it will become a hub for study and collaboration, with fewer shelves and more workspaces.
Project completed, construction set to begin at the start of the year.
It’s still necessary to walk, but now with more reasons to stay on campus.

O - Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão - f**a no centro de Lisboa. Ótimo.
Mas para quem o vive todos os dias, o campus funciona como um conjunto de níveis separados,
ligados por muitas escadas. A TOYNO passou meses a subir e descer esse percurso para perceber que a topografia cria verdadeiros “territórios”.
A solução não foi eliminar essa condição, mas trabalhar com ela: se há partes distintas, cada uma deve ter uma função clara e valer a caminhada.
A primeira intervenção é na biblioteca, o único edifício que liga os dois níveis.
Em vez de ser apenas um lugar de livros, vai tornar-se um hub de estudo e colaboração,
com menos estantes e mais espaços de trabalho.
Projeto fechado, empreitada obra para arrancar no início do ano.
Continua a ser preciso caminhar, mas agora com mais razões para f**ar no campus.
