Hidden away in a small valley at 700m above sea level, Cerdeira was a village of schist houses at risk of disappearing after agricultural acitivity was abandoned in the middle of the 20th Century. Almost 300 years old, the village was built by courageous people, farmers who lived off the land and who, even if they left in search of a better life for their families, would always come back and visit their home. Today, Cerdeira has new stories to tell, of new inhabitants who have, will their persistence and willpower, breathed life and purpose back into this place, of men and women who have knowledgeably restored the houses and made them comfortable, as a 21st century house should be, of guests who choose the village to spend their holidays, and of artists from all over the world who come in search of inspiration.

When clay becomes sound.

What a few days it has been at Cerdeira with Martín and Julieta from Nómada Cerámica.

From shaping ceramic sound masks and playing traditional instruments to sharing mate, building a kiln and experiencing wood firing, these days were all about clay, sound, nature and connection.

A beautiful journey through ceramics, music and ancestral traditions, inspired by the landscape of the Serra da Lousã.

Thank you, Martín and Julieta, for sharing your knowledge, your culture and your creativity with us.

Making Glazes from Rocks

What if the landscape around you could become part of your ceramics?

From rocks, clays, shales and ashes collected from different places, ceramic artist Matthew Blakely explores the possibilities of natural materials and transforms them into unique glazes.

In this hands-on course at Cerdeira, you will learn how to prepare glazes from rocks, experimenting with materials such as Cerdeira’s traditional schist stone, as well as rocks and wood ashes you may bring from home.

You will also have the opportunity to make your own pots, glaze them and take part in the wood firing of the Sasukenei Smokeless Kiln, connecting the materials, the making process and the fire.

A course about ceramics, experimentation and the stories held within the materials we find around us.

What if your stories could be carved into clay?

In this immersive course, you’ll discover sgraffito, an ancient ceramic technique that brings images, lines and stories to life by scratching through layers of slip to reveal the clay beneath.

Guided by ceramic artist Clara Holt, you’ll explore tools, techniques and creative approaches, while developing your own visual language through experimentation, drawing and making.

From simple marks to intricate illustrations, your hands become the storytellers.

A space to learn, experiment and create meaningful pieces from clay.

Green Woodworking – Build Your Own Furniture🪑

Join woodworker Peter Lanyon for an immersive 8-day journey into the art of green woodworking, working with freshly cut wood from the surrounding mountains of Cerdeira.
Through hands-on making and traditional hand tools, you’ll learn how to split, shape and work green wood while exploring two different furniture-making techniques. You’ll also learn how to sharpen and care for your tools, developing skills you can continue using long after the course.
More than learning woodworking techniques, this course is an invitation to slow down, work with your hands and connect with the natural material around you. By the end, you’ll have created two unique stools, designed and made entirely by you.

No previous experience required.
