For many this is the end of the year. To me the new year starts in spring when I start my garden and life comes back after winter’s nap. Nevertheless whether I like it or not my beloved Arundo Donax follows more or less the tax calendar (meaning it finishes it’s life cycle circa now) and exactly today I was gathering canes for the next year creations. This year I learned a lot out of tremendous mistakes I have done while working with flutes. Next year I will hopefully make even more mistakes to get closer to mastery of this craft. The whole process of making flute, specifically Ney flute is mystical and gives me a flavour of touching eternity…
I also learned that having social media and updating them consistently is my worst nightmare so I will try to improve that next year. I wish everything best to all of you not only today but everyday :) see you soon !

Shakuhashi inspired Zen flute for daily meditation. Made of cane of arundo donax, finished with sesame oil and bees wax. Colors of cotton threads were chosen by Tomas to whom I am very grateful for trust in my work :)

Today I would like to present next instrument that I love to craft which is a Shakuhashi-inspired Zen Flute.

It is made of single piece of seasoned Arundo Donax cane, bamboo, mahogany, sesame oil and bees wax. It is a pentatonic flute with warm and soothing sound.
Tuned to A but I can make any other length/tone.

Normally Japanese’s shakuhashi is made of a bamboo cane that’s why I describe it as shakuhashi-inspired flute.

The King. The Essence. The beginning and the end. The transcendence. The Ney.

It is one of the oldest end-blown instruments. Its history extends to nearly 5000 years. Its sound can certainly send you to the far oddments of space or into ancient times of our ancestors from the beginning of the universe. Truly a magic instrument. Piece of cane with holes one could think - seems so simple, huh ? Nothing more wrong. To craft one you must be very careful from the very moment of gathering the canes from the field, through the drying process and to the final crafting process. I will show you all these steps on this page soon. We can divide at least three types of Neys: Arabic, Turkish and Persian. Each has its own specific characteristics and sound. I will also introduce you to all the types of Neys in next posts. For today, I can talk about Arabic Ney that is available for you in my shop :)

The Ney or Nay in direct translation from persian means just a straw. It is made of a piece of hollow Arundo Donax cane with seven finger holes. One of the holes is on the back of the instrument. It is traditionally made of a cane with 9 segments. I must say it is not so easy to find a cane that meets this standard on certain length types of Ney. A highly skilled Ney player, called “neyzen”, can reach more than three octaves, though it is more common to have several „helper” neys to cover different pitch ranges or to facilitate playing technically difficult passages and maqams.Ney occurs in different lengths and tunings. The interval between the holes ranges from a semitone to three quartertones, although microtones (and broader pitch inflections) are achieved via partial hole-covering, changes of embouchure, or positioning and blowing angle. Microtonal inflection is common and crucial to various traditions of taqsim (improvisation on the same scale before a piece is played).You can check what types of Ney you can get from my Etsy store here www.eyeinnature.etsy.com

I create artisanal instruments made of Arundo donax, also known as giant cane, elephant grass, arundo, Spanish cane, wild cane, and giant reed.

Arundo donax is a unique and inspiring plant to me for many reasons. Mainly because of its wide use in different crafts. For a not well-trained eye, it may seem similar to a bamboo reed, but in fact it is not very much alike. Compared to bamboo, Arundo is a little bit more fragile, but I think that is also what makes its acoustic properties so good. It is widely used for construction, gardening and musical purposes. I think it is commonly known for its use in production reeds for modern instruments like saxophone, oboe, bassoon or clarinet. Musicians attach a piece of a reed to the mouthpiece of their instruments to produce a sound. There is also a variety of instruments that are made entirely of arundo donax and those are the ones that are my trade. I will introduce them to you step by step 🙂
